  • Franz Ferdniad is assassinated

    Franz Ferdniad is assassinated
    Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria- Este, also known as Francis Ferdinand. He was born in December 18, 1863 to his father archduke Charles Louis. Francis Ferinand was in the Austro-Hungrian province as an inspector general of the imperial army. He and his wife were travelling in a motorcade in an open topped car. When the motorcade went into a side street and stopped to turn around, Gavrilo Princip found a moment and took it, he shot and killed the couple. This was only the start of WW1.
  • Christmas Truce

    Christmas Truce
    During World War I on Christmas day, the fighting stopped. Christmas Eve Germans and British troops sang Christmas songs to each other across the lines. On Christmas Day German soldiers left the trenches and shouted out “Merry Christmas” in their enemies native tongues. At first Allies thought it was a trick but then when they saw Germans unarmed out of their trenches they knew they were just celebrating. This was never repeated it was the only time this happened.

    Allied Troops Invade Gallipoli
    On April 25, 1915, the Allies launched a land invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula. The Turkish troops were prepared and there to meet them. During the next few months the Allies only made slight gains from their landing sites and had bad casualties. December came around and Sir Charles Monro, a British commander recommended an evacuation from Gallipoli. Then on January 8, 1916 the Allied forces retreated from the shores. 250,000 Allied casualties.

    Sinking of Lusitania
    On May 7, 1915 a German U- boat torpedoed a British-owned luxury steamship, Lusitania. It killed 1128 people and 128 of them were Americans. The tragedy made the neutral United States fueled with anger and eventually led to the US entering the War.
  • Trench Foot

    Trench Foot
    Many soldiers fighting WWI suffered from something called trench foot. It is an infection on the foot caused by wet, cold, and bad conditions. Men would stand in waterlogged trenches all day without being able to remove their socks or boots. The feet would usually go numb and the skin would turn red or blue and if it went untreated it would result in amputation.

    New Technology in WWI
    There were plenty of new technology during World War. Flamethrowers were used against British to get soldiers out of their trenches. Airplanes were used to observe enemy troops but then the opposite side would shoot down the plane, making it no use. Poison gas was released in the air nearby enemy lines, making it hard for the enemy to fight. Naval guns were mounted on railroad cars to shoot trench mortars.

    Battle of Somme
    The Battle of the Somme, happened during July to November in 1916. They turned into one of the most costly battles of WWI.
    Britsih forces lost 57,000 men to casualties and more than 19000 soldiers killed on the first day of battle. Before the attack Allies had launched a week long heavy artillery bombardment. Then on the morning of July 1, 1916 the British Army started advancing to Somme.

    Henry McNutt is writing to this person named Myrtle, who is a little girl and also his cousin. He says he didn’t know if Myrtle was dead, married, or too busy to write. He says his Sister-In-Law has a girl picked out for McNutt. Apparently this girl’s dad is worth 60,000 dollars. He also writes about a guy who might have an interest in Myrtle. He wants a good picture of her so he can show people.

    On April 6 1917 the U.S. joined the fight against its allies. They fought under the command of Major General John J. Pershing. 2 million soldiers fought on the battlefields in France. Most people wanted the US to stay neutral but when the Germans U boat torpedoed a ship that had 128 Americans on it, that drew the line.

    Plastic Surgery was Invented in WWI
    During world war one facial injuries were not easily treated on the front line. Doctors would just stitch together a would without taking into account the flesh that had been lost. When the scars healed the flesh tightened and pulled the face making it hideous. A hospital names Queens Hospital was made to reconstruct wounded men's faces as normal as possible. Gilles the doctor that performed it knew the tissue needed to move back to its normal position.

    He says that Myrtle’s letters are getting lost and that he is getting them late. He said that he sent a letter from South Carolina when he was broke and didn’t have a postage stamp, he explains that is the brokest he has ever been in his life. He then talked about how many guys Myrtle is getting and that he doesn’t want them to be too old for her.

    Henry explains to Myrtle that he is at his brother's house for a 48 hour leave. He apologizes for saying he will do something and then doing it 6 months later. He said he has a lot of things to put up with while being in the Navy. He says he likes telling her the foolish things he does. He also says he wants her to know him how he is. He also starts talking about a fellow person who did a pretty serious offense and it going to trial.

    In this letter it shows how hard being away from family is. Henry rights about how disappointed he is that he won't be able to see Myrtle but he would love to see her but he won’t get the chance. He said he dreams of the day he gets to come home, he explains that he is miserable and just wants to see Myrtle.

    In this letter, Henry told Myrtle he won’t be writing her for a while because he is exhausted. He started working at 5:30 and worked through 4 am. They are loading cargo. He tells her he is anxious to get to the sea and says this will be his last letter until he gets back.

    World War 1 had a lot of names. The Great War, WWI is one of the largest wars in history and was the first global war that lasted for more than 4 years. The War to End All Wars, the War had lots of advances in military technology, stuff no one has ever seen before. After the war ended people hoped it would be the last war. The War to Make the World Safe for Democracy, the name is based on a speech given by President Woodrow Wilson to congress, where he asked to declare war on Germany.
