Nya's Journey for water starts
Eleven year old Nya has to bring a container all the way to a pond to get water daily. It takes her a long time. She has to hurry so it wouldn't be noon by the time she gets back. She wants it to take at least half the morning to get there but it will be hard because of the heat, time, and thorns, even though going is the easy part. -
Nya's Journey for water
Nya is on the way to the pond and she steps on a large thorn. She tries to use her finger to get it out but it didn't work so she gets another piece of thorn to take it off. It hurts her so bad. -
Nya's Journey for water
Nya finally gets the muddy water from the pond and drinks some. She prepares for her journey home by arranging a cloth donut on her head then places the full container of water on the doughnut to bring home. She uses a heavy container to bring the water home. -
Nya's Journey for water
Every year when the village's water dries up because of no rain, Nya's family has to go to another location (a camp) to have water. She has to dig for a long time in the dried up lake. The water is dirty and mostly clay, but she has to do the job every day for 5 months. -
Nya's Journey for water
Nya is finally home, and her mother gives her sorghum and milk to eat. She has a younger sister who she has to help take care of named Akeer. Then Nya goes back to the pond but this time with her sister Akeer (even though she thinks Akeer is too young to go). Nya holds her little sisters hand in one hand and has the empty plastic container in the other hand. Nya has to do her water job every single day for seven months. -
Nya's Journey for water
Nya found out that her mom disliked the camp that they go to every year. Her mom had many reasons to dislike the camp. Nya's mother was afraid that something would happen to her husband and son while they were out hunting. She was afraid that something would happen because while they were hunting the Dinka people were also hunting there and most families lost their loved ones because of the fighting. -
Nya's Journey for water
Nya's sister gets sick from drinking the dirty, muddy water. She doesn't know whether or whether not to bring her to the doctors. She has to decide between taking a several day walk to the doctors(even though she doesnt think Akeer could survive that walk) or leaving her sister at the camp and letting her heal on her own. -
Nya's Journey
Nya finds out that the men that came to the village are talking to her Uncle about making a water source in between two trees where the Nuer tribe sings and talks around a fire. -
Nya's Journey
Nya's family ended up taking Akeer to the doctor, and she was completely fine. Nya worried about them drinking the same water and getting sick because the doctor said to boil the water to purify it but she knew that if she couldn't wait, then Akeer couldn't either. Also Nya's mom knew that if they boiled the little water they get it would all evaporate before they get a chance to drink it. -
Nya's Journey
One day, not long before Nya's family must go to the lake camp Nya sees many men coming in jeeps to talk to her Uncle, the village chief. Nya asks her brother, Dep, what the men are talking about and he says that they are talking about the water, and she thinks about it and says why would they be discussing that? We already have a pond of water. -
Nya's Journey
The people in Nya's village had started to burn bushes and trees to clear the area for the water source. Nya thinks that the men won't find water because the area was so dry and it was the dry season. She was wondering how they would find water in such dry land. -
Nya's Journey
Nya's brother, Dep explains to her what the men in the village are doing. He says that right now the water is muddy because the men haven't dug deep enough to get the clean water. Once they have dug deep enough they will put a pipe, build a foundation, and pour cement around the entire thing. Nya knows that there is a lot more work to do and it will take several days. -
Nya's Journey
Ten men and two trucks arrived at the village, with a lot of heavy machinery. Nya is calling a crane an iron giraffe because she is surrounded by animals and doesn't know about the new technology. The workers are starting to find water with all of the different tools they have. The workers made the rocks into gravel and Nya was wondering why they need so much of it. -
Nya's Journey
Nya doesn't know how the men are getting water from the ground. She sees men drilling holes and putting water in a bag that keeps leaking over and over again. The leaks are causing the workers to slow down but the boss keeps them going, even if they don't want to work. Nya thinks that the boss is very nice, she knows that he sometimes he gets angry but she still thinks he is really nice. The boss keeps working, the workers keep working, and Nya keeps on wondering how the men will find water. -
Nya's Journey
The men finally got the water. Everyone was excited to see water gushing out of the ground. When they finally got the water, everyone was cheering and singing, except for Nya. Nya wasn't happy because of the water, it was all muddy and dirty the same type of water that got her sister, Akeer, sick. -
Nya's Journey
Nya finally finds fresh, clean water. Her dad comes and tells her that they are going to make a School in the land that they are prepping and that all children, girls included, can go to school. Then Nya's father tells her to get water. -
Nya's Journey ends
The men there built a well and people gathered around the weell. Everyone is so happy about the water and they are taking turns drinking the water. Nya is very excited of her and her family going to school. When Nya and Dep are waiting in the line, they are talking about the leader and Nya finds out he is Dinka. She thanks him and finds out that his name is Salva. Over the years, Salva has helped people in Africa by giving them schools and wells.
