    Born-September 28, 1932 in the locality of Lonquén, near the city of Santiago, to poor peasants Manuel Jara and Amanda Martínez. His father Manuel was illiterate and encouraged his children to work from an early age to help the family survive, rather than to attend school. By the age of 6, Jara was already working on the land

  • Mother's death

    Mothers death-March 9 1940.
    Victor Jara’s mother died when he was 15 years old. His mother died in 1947. Jara was devastated when his mom died. After his mother's death he started to look for help.

  • Father left

    Father Left-June 17th 1940. Victor Jara’s father had a drinking problem. After several years of unhappiness his father moved to the country. Which left his mother to take care of him and his siblings all alone.

    School and Guitar- August 24 1942. They rented the room to a local schoolteacher. The schoolteacher also knew how to play the guitar , and so she taught Victor how to play a few chords

    He was in the Military rising to the rank of sergeant first class and earning a glowing final report that praised his leadership qualities and identified him as officer material.

    Worked as a child-he had to collect firewood. They also had to cut down small trees with an axe. They also had to take care of the pigs that they raised.

    Children (two boys) -January 26 1965- Victor and Joan had a child which was Amanda Jara. They also had Manuela Jara. Manuela was born before Victor and Joan got married. Manuela was born during Joan’s former marriage. They had two boys and two girls. The two boys names were Roberto Jara and Eduardo Jara.

    Arrested-September 11 1973- His fingers were smashed by the prison guards and they mocked him by telling him to play his guitar.

  • Death

    Died-September 21, 1973- His body was later thrown onto a shanty street. He died from getting tortured and he was then shot and killed. Jara was killed by Chilean Security forces.
