Van Gogh's birth
Born in Zundert,Holland.He was the son of a pastor. Ha had a sister and a brother,Theo. -
His first job
He started to work at the age of 16 for an art dealer in The Hague. -
Van Gogh takes up painting.
He takes painting lessons from Anton Mauve in Hague. The way he uses light and the looseness in his brushstrokes reveal his influence from the School of Hague. -
Moving to Paris
In spring 1886 he moves to Montmarte with his brother Theo.There he meets the impressionists and gets greatly influenced by the technique of pointillism. -
The argument with Gauguin
His friend Gauguin followes him in Arles but near the end of 1888, after a number of arguments with Vincent, he decides to leave.Van Gogh pursues him with an open razor,ending up cutting a portion of his own ear lobe off. -
Starry Night
The Starry Night, the most famous painting by Van Gogh, was painted while he was in the asylum. -
Leaving the asylum
In May 1890 he left the clinic and moved to Auvers-sur-Oise where he was looked after by the doctor Paul Gachet .There he created the portrait of the melancholic Dr.Gachet, which was sold for $82.5 million at Christie's, in May 1990 -
Van Gogh's death
Van Gogh committed suicide on the 27th July of the same year. As he was painting he shot himself in the chest .Theo unable to come to terms with his brother's death,he died 6 months later and was buried next to him. -
Van Gohg's painting "Irises"
The painting was sold for a record $53.9 million at Southeby's.
