The happy couple ties the knot. After knowing each other for a year Jack could not resist beginning to court her. After 3 years of courting, he presents her with a diamond ring and askes her to marry him, and thankfully she says yes because Jack had declared that he would blow his brains out if she hadn't. All seemed well in the world and they would surely build a great life together, one would think. -

Jack Wilson Sails to Canada
Shamed and aggrieved because of his actions, John boards a steamer from Liverpool hoping it would take him to a new, better life. His uneventful trip across the Atlantic occurred just a couple of months after the sinking of the Titanic. After arriving on the east coast, John boards trains to take him west. He was lured to the prairies, specifically Saskatoon because of propaganda in the London emigration office, speaking of free land and how fast the city was growing. -

John Wilson Joins the RNWMP
Since John is rejected from the Army, he decides to attempt to join the RNWMP, an organization that was desperate for more men to enforce laws in the vast prairies. He manages to get in despite his condition and sees this as a new start in his life. He wears the red uniform in pride, ready to protect and serve. He undergoes training at Depot in Regina before he will be sent out to a detachment. His wife back in Scotland is very happy with this news of Jack finding work as a mounted policeman. -
John Joins the Blaine Lake RNWNP

John Meets Jessie Patterson
This is an important event in the story because it influences many of Jack's decisions in the future. He had gravitated toward the Patterson's home in every spare minute he had, and was very compelled by Jessie. Their feelings for each other became real, and John attempted to enlist in the army again as rumours went around Blaine Lake that Wilson was a married man. He doesn't let the rumours discourage him from pursuing Jessie, after all, he could always lie his way out of it. Right? -
John is Diagnosed with Tuberculosis
John has had lung difficulty for some time now, but only at this time does he find out what has been causing it. The dreaded tuberculosis. A disease that apparently had a sophisticated aura about it and was called an artist's disease. The disease also made him wish he had never left his old life. This puts Jack out of work and leaves him resting. This is an important event in the plot because it is what brought John and Jessie very close and intimate level, as Jessie had to take care of John. -

Polly Arrives at Halifax Harbour
After not receiving news from Jack for a long while, Polly decided on Hogmanay that she wants to see her husband who she has been separated from for many years. She goes against what her family says and travels to Canada to search for her long lost husband. She makes the quest across the Atlantic on the Mauretania with hopes of finding her beloved Jack. She finally arrives at the Halifax Harbour, where four months earlier a large explosion had killed 18 thousand people. -
Polly Calls Jack's Prince Albert Office From Regina
Potentially the worst thing that could happen to Jack's new life is his wife from the Old Country randomly showing up and waking in on the new life he had built. Unfortunately for him that's exactly what happened and he never would have seen it coming. A call comes to the RNWMP office in Prince Albert while Jack is there volunteering to go overseas, and what do you know, its for John. He faces pure shock when he hears his wife's voice over the phone, and they make plans to meet up. -
Polly Discovers a Letter From Jessie
Jack made a costly mistake by leaving a letter from Jessie hanging out of his jacket pocket which he left at home. Not only did this confirm Polly's suspicions about there being another woman, but this forced her to seek out Jack in front of his friends which exposed him. This event also forced Jack to add more lies in his already huge web of deceit. He tells Polly that he has been trying to break it off with Jessie and that it was nothing because they only got attached because of his illness. -

John Purchases a Marriage Licence
Jack enters Wheatley's Jewellery Store appearing nervous and pale, making a request for a marriage licence. He does not seem giddy and happy like a husband-to-be should, instead he is sweaty and trembling. Wilson lies about his marital status to the man working there, and declares that he is a bachelor. He then rejects a wedding ring and a present for Jessie, and then proceeds to meet up with Polly, for whom he has some big plans. -
John Murders Polly
Jack decides to end his relationship with Polly in the most extreme way possible: murder. The way he performs the act is very lackluster and unplanned. They are driving by Blaine Lake and Polly can tell something is wrong by Jack's behavior. He kills her by shooting her in the head with a double barrel shotgun that he brought from Scotland. He then proceeds to drive around with the body in the car until he buries her in a shallow grave. He crashes the car and it burns, then he goes for help. -
