    The Old Man's Shack
    The old man and the boy go back to his shack. He has some of his wife's old belongings hanging up, but can't hang up her picture. The boy and the man talk about baseball. The boy then goes out to buy sardines and finds that the old man has fallen asleep when he returns. After he wakes up, they discuss dinner and found out "the owner," named Martin, gave them the food.

    The story starts by introducing an old fisherman that has not caught anything in 84 days. The man is with a boy that he has taught to fish. The boy wants to help the old man. The old man, whose name is Santiago, taught the boy how to fish when he was young.

    The Old man and the boy make their way to the terrace. The boy keeps offering to help the old man with his fishing, but the old man insist the boy worry about himself. While the two are talking, other fishermen are making fun of the old man, but he does not care. Before they leave the boy buys the old man sardines for bait.

    We find out that the old man sleeps on newspapers, and uses newspapers as a pillow. He also dreams of Africa and lions. He used to dream of his wife, but now he old dreams of Africa.

  • Day two

    Day two
    The old man and the boy wake up when the moon is still out. The boy helps the old man carry his firing gear and the old man sets out for another day of fishing.
  • The Old Man Catches a Marlin

    The Old Man Catches a Marlin
    Santiago catches a tuna and uses it as bait. Eventually, a marlin bites the old man's line and he wishes the boy was there to help him. The marlin stays on the line into the cold night. Suddenly the man realizes his boat is moving, but he does not want to let the fish go.

    Santiago Remembers his Past Fishing Experience
    Santiago remembers when he hooked a male and female marlin together. He remembers that the boy was with him and he starts to feel lonely and sad.
  • Day Three

    Day Three
    The fish almost pulls the old man into the water. Santiago cuts his hand and it starts to bleed. After awhile his has starts to cramp and he is humiliated.
  • The Fish Jumps

    The Fish Jumps
    After wishing the boy was there to massage his hand cramp away, the fish jumps. It is purple and as long as the boat. The old man says he has caught a fish like this, but never alone. Just in case the fish decides to stay on the line for another night, the old man decides to cast out his other lines.
  • The Second night

    The Second night
    Night rolls around again. He eats the raw fish and notes that bad weather will be coming soon. Santiago is sorry that he has to kill the fish. Santiago goes to sleep and dreams of "the long yellow beach and he saw the first of lions come down onto it in the early dark and then the other lions came...".
  • Day Four

    Day Four
    The old man is woken up by the fish jerking on the line. It keeps jumping out of the water causing the old man's hands to be cut. After the fish circles the boat for awhile the old man finally kills the marlin.
  • The Old Man Reaches home

    The Old Man Reaches home
    Santiago keeps sailing home. When he finally makes it to shore, he goes home and sleeps.
  • Sharks!

    Sharks!
    Santiago heads home, but as he heads home a shark catches a sent of the marlin's blood. The shark tries to eat the fish, so Santiago has to kill the shark. More sharks keep coming and Santiago keeps them away as best as he can. By the time he is done, there is nothing left to the marlin.
  • The Fifth Day

    The Fifth Day
    The boy finds Santiago in his poor state at his shack. This causes him to weep and he goes to get the old man some coffee. The fisherman marvel at the fish the old man caught. The boy returns to Santiago's shack with coffee and waits for him to wake up.
  • The Old Man Wakes

    The Old Man Wakes
    When the old man awakes, the boy gives him his coffee. The man tells the boy about his journey. Santiago asks that the head of the fish be given Pedrico, who has providing food and care for him. After the boy leaves, the old man goes to sleep and dreams about lions.
