Link James Monroe Phillips moved to Iowa when he was older, and then went to the Gold Rush in 1849. After that he went to war when he was in his early thirties. He probably went by himself to CA for the Gold Rush, which made him physically and mentally stronger, and that was helpful for when he went to war. He had experienced missing his family before, which made him stronger. Evie's dad used to work for the local 49 Union, and James Monroe Phillips fought for the Union and was in the '49 gold rush!

His family was proud that he was fighting for slaves rights with the Union. Also, when he enlisted, he wasn't sure if he would get in because he was married and had two kids, so he lied and said he was younger than he was. When he decided to leave for war, he was going to lose a lot of time with his family and a lot of his kids' childhood. Roughly 68,1067 men came home from the war. James was one them.

    Life after War
Link James Monroe Phillips lived to be 99. He got land from the government and became a farmer for the rest of his life. The documents never said he was shot or got seriously ill, therefore he probably didn't have any bullet holes or permanent illness damage when he came home. He also got to be a farmer, which he always had wanted to do.
