The Birth
Benjamin Button's birth, is a fascinating, and frightening, moment for all that are involved. Instead of being born as a newborn, Benjamin was born is a septugenarian man with a lengthy beard. The response to this is fear that this "baby" may be an imposter. How will he fit socially? What will others think? "Am I mad?" thundered Mr. Button, his terror resolving into rage. "Is this some ghastly hospital joke?" "It doesn't see, like a joke to us," replied the nurse severely (62) -
Benjamin's first Clothes
The purchasing of a new outfit is Mr. Button's first step in proving that his son is not as old his appearance portrays him "Well-" He Hesitated. The notion of dressing his son in men's clothes was repugnant to him. If say, he could only find a very large boy's suit, he might cut off that long and awful beard, dye the white hair brown, and thus manage to conceal the worst and to retatin something of his own self-respect..." -
Benjamin Goes To Kindergarten
Schooling is a must for children's sucess, and Mr. Button takes initatitve. Kindergarten, is a more relaxed level where children learn creativity "...He was initiated into the art of pasting green paper on orange paper, of weaving colored maps and manufacturing eternal cardboard necklaces." Alas, Benjmain is taken out of kindergarten, barring complaints from the adults. -
Benjamin's 12th Birthday
Upon looking in the mirror, Benjamin pronounces that he has changed; his appearance has changed somewhat from older, to younger, and that this be a time to wear the long trousers, which are a sign of manhood "I am grown," he announced determinedly. "I want to put on long trousers." Mr. Button allows him to wear the trousers, though the age is not yet the right one. -
College Applicating
At the age of eighteen, Benjamin's father takes Benjamin to Yale for examinations for his entrance into the college. His age overshadows his intelligence, and the registar insists that he is older than he is.
"I'm very glad to meet you, Mr. Button. I'm expecting your son here any minute."
"That's me! burst out Benjamin. "I'm a freshman."
"What!"
"I'm a freshman."
"Surely your joking."
"Not at all."
Dissapointment for Benjamin, as he is sent away. -
First Social Outing
Benjamin poses as Roger Button's brother, to dance with a woman: Hildegarde Moncrief. This is the first major social event and Benjamin's first inadvertant fib about his age; he does not tell her of his actual age, but instead goes with the flow: "You and your brother got here just as we did didn't you?" asked Hildegarde. It really is crazy how Benjamin gets away with this. Benjamin Button, you are a clever soul. -
Benjamin's Engagement
Benjamin is engaged, and it is made known. Of course their are doubters with most marriages and with Benjamin it is no different. "Everyone agreed with General Moncrief that it was "criminal" for a lovely girl who could have married any beau in Baltimore to through hersekf into the arms of a man who was assuredly fifty." -
30 Y.O.A
Benjamin is getting younger, and his appearance proves it; he know looks like a thirty year old man. "Good Lord!" he said aloud. The process was continuing." -
Grandpa Benjamin
Roscoe's child is born, as Benjamin descends into childhood. Again their are doubters about his age "No one disliked the little boy whose fresh, cheerful face was crossed with just a hint of sadness." Emotions are becoming overwhelming, as Benjamin goes right back to where he should have began. -
A Friendly Farewell
"Then it was all dark, and his white crib and the dim faces that moved above him, and the warm sweet aroma of the milk, faded out altogether from his mind." Benjamin has finally become a newborn, and therefore his lifetime has come to an end. Reflecting on his life shows that anyone can suceed, and no matter how different you are, you have the RIGHT to suceed, -
Entrance into Harvard University
Benjamon enters himself into Harvard University, as his appearance proves that he is a man of younger age. "...his sucess was largely due to the fact that in the football fame with Yale he played so brilliantly, with so much dash and with such a cold remorseless anger that he scored seven touchdowns..." Benjamin indeed is making a prescence.
