Jay Gatz meets Dan Cody.
After attending college for two weeks, Jay drops out. He later begins to work at Lake Superior the next summer. One day he sees a yacht owned by Dan Cody, a wealthy copper mogul, he goes over there to warn him about the upcoming storm. Cody then took Jay onto his yacht as his personal assistant. -
Dan Cody dies.
Cody was a heavy drinker, and one of Gatsby's jobs was to look after him during his drunken binges. The gave Gatsby a healthy for the dangers of alcohol and convinced him not to become a drinker himself. When Cody died, he left Gatsby $25,000, but Cody's mistress prevented him from claiming his inheritance. Gatsby then dedicated himself to become a wealthy and successful man. -
Lieutenant Gatsby Meets Daisy Fay.
Gatsby comes from another part of the country to Camp Taylor near St. Louis, Missouri. While stationed there he met Daisy when he joined other officers who went to her luxurious house. Amazed by her house and wealth, he took Daisy under false pretenses because he led her to believe that he, too, came from a wealthy family. Daisy and her mother found out that he wasn't rich so, Daisy's mom told her she couldn't date him anymore.
