    background

    At a very young age Howard had to take care of his mother and grandmother because his father was a drunk who eventually was kicked out of the house by Howard himself. In doing so he had to leave school and go to work to provide for his family. Once a former teacher realized how intelligent Ainken was she decided to help him go back to school and still be able to take care of his family by getting him a night job at the school in oder for him to study during the day.

    Howard finished his studies from Arsenal Technical High school which then he was offered a job with Madison Gas and Electric Company.

    College

    Howard attended the University of Wisconsin where he also worked night jobs in order to attend his studies and take care of his mother. By 1923 he was awarded a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.

    Aiken resigned from the company to enter the Central Station Division of the Westinghouse Electrical and Manufacturing Company.
  • Lifestyle Change

    He decided he didn't like engineering and went back to school but this time at the University of Chicago. He soon left the University only after two quarters because he did not like to Chicago program.

    Aikens first proposal of a calculating machine consisted on a lot of paper work but soon gave him the idea for Mark I/ASCC

    In June he received his A.M. in physicis and soon finished his thesis (Theory of Space Charge Conduction) the following autumn.

    IBM decided to approve Aikens machine and start the plans to build it.

    In the winter Aiken was awarded a Ph.D. in physics.

    Teaching

    Before Aiken could receive his masters degree he was first to become a professor in Physics. He taught at Havard the same school he finished at with a Ph.D.
  • Mark II

    Mark II
    The Mark II was created for the Naval Proving Ground at Dahlgren.
  • Mark III

    The third machine Aiken created was similar to the Mark II was thought to be broken until they realized that is should just stay on instead of turning it on and off every weekend.
  • Mark IV

    The last machine Aiken created worked wonders and was designed for the US Air Force.
