Charlie's father's death
2 months before the story starts, Charlie's loving father dies from Spanish flu. For that, in the age of 15, he became the oldest man who has responsibility to take care of his mother and his young brother from poverty. -
Squizzy Taylor's employment
To be accepted by Squizzy, the triers has to win a race while keeping the eggs in the jewellery box safe. Charlie wanted to work for Squizzy as it was one of the prime job in Richmond. He had to compete three other boys where he met his enemy, Barlow and his best friend, Norman. After the intensive game, Charlie managed beat all the boys and get employee as the message deliverer of Squizzy. -
Disagreement
When Squizzy Taylor told Charlie's mother about his employment, she strongly disagreed as she knew that Squizzy Taylor's the most dangerous gangster in Melbourne. However, Charlie was so desperate, that he decided to work for him anyways. -
First Week Job
The first week of the job was fairly easy for Charlie. Most of them were simple like picking up creams and lotions for Dolly. It was more like a test of Squizzy to see if he can trust Charlie with his money. Charlie worked well and soon, Squizzy trusted him with his money. -
Mr Peacock's Visit
Mr Peacock was Charlie's father's old friend, who promise to produce wood for Charlie's family. However, after Charlie's father's death, Mr Peacock wasn't like before anymore. He abused Charlie's mother and Charlie's mother couldn't bare the trouble. She started to become mentally unstable -
The hit
Charlie was wild and mad after seeing Mr Peacock violently hitting his mother. He couldn't bare his anger and hit him hard with the bat. Trail of blood was dripping from his face and Mr Peacock dropped down. -
Help
Charlie and his mother was both shocked and worried about the hit as it hurt Mr Peacock very much. Charlie asked for help to Squizzy and soon, Squizzy settled the accident down by using his power. -
Unstableness
Mr. Peacock forgot his memories partially after getting hit by Charlie with the bat. However, Charlie's mother still couldn't get the incident out of her head. He became mentally unstable. Charlie's family was in another danger now. -
Hard Works
Squizzy Taylor started to expect more from Charlie and started to give harder works such as liquor delivery and money collecting. It was quite dangerous from Charlie. -
Norman Heath's game
Norman got into the famous football team. Charlie visited Norman's game with Mr and Mrs Heath. However, unfortunately Norman had to verse the team Barlow was in. Barlow was very strong and ruff. Norman was strong and he managed to win against Barlow. -
First Sight
Charlie first saw Alice at Norman's football game and was attracted straight away. He couldn't concentrate on Norman's game at all, but he kept looking for Alice. -
Change
Charlie started to notice the dirty side of Squizzy Taylor. At the start, Squizzy Taylor was always calm, strong and perfect until he had conflict with Snowy Cutmore, the Fitzroy gangster. -
Collecting
The second time Charlie saw Alice was when he went to collect money for Squizzy at Fitzroy, as he had to collect money from her father. After this incident, Charlie recognized that his job wasn't right. -
Barlow's Attack
Norman was helping with Charlie's night job when they met Barlow and his gang. They knew they couldn't defeat, and started to run off when Norman got caught. Norman got bashed by the Barlow's gang when Charlie ran away. Norman was in serious injury. -
Runner
Charlie felt very sorry for Norman. He found out that working for Squizzy Taylor is dangerous and inappropriate. Charlie boldly announced his action of quitting his job to Squizzy Taylor. He wanted to use his talents for good things and decided to become a runner. -
Training
Mr Redmond, Charlie's good neighbour, helped Charlie's way being a runner. Mr Redmond worked hard as Charlie's running trainer, making Charlie chase around the rabbits. -
The Race at Ballarat
After hard times training, Charlie improved a lot. Charlie and Mr Redmond decided to give it a try to the race at Ballarat. They left the hometown, to the Ballarat. -
Win
Charlie takes place in the final after few pre races, which he didn't quite try his best. However, at the finals, Charlie gave his best try, and he became the great winner of the race
