Rod graduates from high school
In Erikson’s fifth stage, Identity vs. Role Confusion
• This stage occurs during adolescence between the ages of approximately 12 and 18. Rod is faced with several decisions regarding post-high school. He is working, and takes one of two scholarship offers to an attend a local university. Rod feels overwhelmed attending college, and working not wanting to go into debt with student loans decides to join the USAF with his father’s encouragement. -
Rod and Kim get married
In Erikson’s sixth stage, Intimacy vs. Isolation. Rod was stationed overseas. He came from a big family, and he felt all he needed was a good woman to marry and to start his own family. He was lonely, and longed for an intimate relationship. When he met Kim it was love at first sight. -
Rod heads back to college to further his education and employment opportunities
In Erikson’s seventh stage Generativity vs. Stagnation - Rod has a military pension, and equity in his home but as a coach for 23+ years for a 501c3 he needed a less physically demanding job. Without a 401K he doesn’t expect to retire and enjoy his golden years. Rod uses some vocational rehabilitation VA benefits to help him pursue a new career path in Human Services.
