Enlistment
Robert Cruickshank enlisted to fight in the Civil War on August, 5,1862. e had a wife and a baby at home when he left. -
The First Journey
they left Salem at 10 pm on friday night they the whole camp did not stop until they reached KinderHook on the Hudson. Then they left to NewYork, from there they will go to washington DC. -
leaving
Robert"s camp left NewYork and went to Washington DC where they enjoyed breakfast of bread and coffe , afterthat they marched back to camp. -
Battle
Cruickshank hears gunfire and a cannon in the direction of General McClellan's Headquarters. He does not participate in the battle but he can see it and hear it in the distance. -
Battle at Boonesville
Cruickshank and others at his camp witnessed the battle in Boonesville from Maryland Heights and could see it in the distance, but they did not take part in it. They could hear the sound of the cannon and the musket fire very distincly. -
Harper's Ferry Hospital

Return to Camp
Cruickshank returns to camp after recovering from sickness and is greeted by his fellow soldiers.After that he was recommended to be the secnd lutenent of the company. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
http://www.historyplace.com/civilwar/Cruickshank fights in and witnesses the Battle of Chancellorsville and watches his friends die. 17,00 were killed, wounded, and missing out of 130,000. Cruickshank saw things such as people in his company getting shot and killed, but he himself was not hurt. The most devastating thing he saw in the battle was his friend that he calls "Brother Will" gets shot and dies right in front of him. -
Battle of Gettysburg
on July 1 Cruickshank and the other soldiers marched towards Gettysburg to get ready for battle, and ended up having to sleep on the battle ground.The next day the battle of Gettysburg began and Cruickshank fought in it many people died and he was there to witness all of it. After the battle the soldiers sat on the Battle feild and ate while surrounded by hundreds of dead men. -
Boarding
Cruickshank gets sick when he is in Waashington Dc he has to stay at a boarding house That cost ten dollars a week. He is with an army surgeon so he doesnt have to pay for a doctor. -
Seminary Hospital
Cruickshank gets sick and has to take some time off from being a soldier. He writes his wife and takes ong walks until he eventually gets better. he is at the Seminary Hospital that is a place for wounded soldiers so he is not alone. -
Return
Cruickshank is released from the hospital and orders to join his Regiment in Washington DC.HE then takes trains to many places to find his regiment and finally finds them about a mile from one of the stations. -
Battle Near Resca Gap
Cruickshank and the other soliders marched from April 27 to May 14 when finally the Battle Near resca Gap happened. They were greatly outnumbered by the enemy but eventually they charged into them and left their dead men on the feild. afterward Cruickshank and others stayed on the Battle feild and layed by their arms all night. -
Cassville
The Battle of Cassville was a short battle the enemy caused little to no injury and Cruickshank was not hurt at all. They drove the enemy through the town of Cassville and later continued to march on. -
Battle of Dallas
As soon as Cruickshank reached the foot Allatoona Ridge he was ordered to fight.His regiment was placed in the second line of battle when the fight commenced. Soon after Cruickshank witnessed a man get shot in the head, Cruickshank himself gets shot but the musketball does not break the skin. He also witnessed Colonel McDougall's knee get shattered by a musket ball. In the end their loss was about one thousand and they remained on the line until four in the morning and got to rest the days after -
Lost Mountain
Cruickshank"s Regiment was givin orders to march and when they reached their destination they laid down and shells were flying over their head. They stayed in that position with their guns all night. The next morning the enemy opened fire but still all the shell went over the soldiers head. One of the enemy soldiers threw a shell and it exploded among them. The enemy left in a hurry carrying off one of their dead men. the next day the enemy was gone without a trace. -
Battle of Culp's Farm
Many of the people in Cruickshank"s regiment died and he was there to witness it all. He got many orders to check on the enemys to see what they were planning.The regiment was shot at all day and in the end the enemy picked up their dead and wounded by torch light, Cruickshank had ten less men then what he started out with, two killed, three wounded, and five taken prisoner. all in all the regiment lost forty eight men. Over one fifth of the men lost were Cruickshank's. -
THe Battle of Peachtree Creek
In this battle every time the enemy would charge, Cruickshank taught his company to fire low so they had a better chance of injuring the enemy instead of missing by shooting to high. Sergeant William Hutton was shot during the crossfire and Henery Danforth was shot , shattering his thigh. Cruickshank himself was not injured. -
Atlanta
there was not much fighting because the enemy retreated firing while they fell back. when they came back in the city there was no more firing Cruickshank and his people followed through to the eastside -
Almost Home
In a few weeks Cruickshank will be home. Him and other soldiers are currently in Washington DC. -
Leaving the Army
The War is over and Cruickshank has been discharged.He is on his way back to Newyork.
