Jackson Assassination Attempt
All Presidential Assassinations On this date, outside the Capital Building, a house painter named Richard Lawrence tried shooting Andrew Jackson with two pistols. He missed both shots though and was quickly apprehended after Jackson beat him with a cane. Lawrence was found not guilty of his crime. He was instead sent to a mental institution due to insanity and he died there in 1861. -
Taylor's Death
On July 4, 1850 Zachary Taylor was diagnosed with cholera morbus. It involves diarrhea and dysentry. He could have also had food poisoning from eating iced milk, cold cherries and pickles at an Independence Day celebration. He died on July 9, 1850 and people think he could have been assassinated via the food he ate. -
Lincoln Assassination
Wikipedia The assassination of Abraham Lincoln took place on Good Friday, April 14, 1865. Him and his wife were at a theater enjoying a show. They were supposed to be guarded by a man named John Frederick Parker but he wasn't at his post. John Wilkes Booth sneaked his way in and shot Lincoln in the head and escaped through the door but he later entered an empty building and they burnt it down. -
Garfield Assassination
Wikipedia James A. Garfield was assassinated in Washington, D.C. On July 2 of 1881, he was scheduled to leave Washington for summer vacation. Charles Guiteau waited for Garfield on the train station. As Garfield entered the waiting room at the station, Guiteau stepped up and shot him from behind but only grazed his arm. He then shot again straight in the back and Garfield died soon later. -
McKinley Assassination
William McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901. He was at a public reception and people were given the chance to greet him personally. Many people had handkerchiefs to wipe their face due to the heat that day. When it was Leon Czolgosz turn to greet him, he had the handkerchief around his right hand as if he was injured but he was concealing the gun. He then shot McKinley twice in the abdomen and McKinley died 8 days later due to his wounds. -
Roosevelt Assassination Attempt
Three years after Theodore Roosevelt left office, he ran for president as a member of the Progressive Party. Before his campaign speech, Roosevelt was shot by John Schrank in the chest. Luckily, Roosevelt was protected by his 50-page speech and metal glasses case. They slowed the bullet down which saved his life. -
Harding's Death
At the end of July, while traveling south from Alaska, Harding was thought to have pneumonia. He died either of a heart attack or stroke. He had only been ill for one week. Some people think he could have been assassinated somehow. -
Hoover Assassination Attempt
Herbert Hoover was going for a seven-week tour of Latin American countries. In Argentina, he escaped an assassination attempt. A group led by Severino Di Giovanni tried to blow up his railroad car. The perpetrators were caught before they could do anything. -
Kennedy Assassination
Wikipedia President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. He was riding in his limousine with his wife on a route to Dealey Plaza. Unexpectedly, he was shot in the head by a rifle from a nearby building. The perpetrator was Lee Harvey Oswald. -
2nd Nixon Assassination Attempt
Samuel Byck planned to kill Richard Nixon by hijacking a commercial airliner and flying it into the White House. He hijacked the plane while it was still on the ground. He shot and killed the pilot and copilot. Then an officer shot Byck through the plane's door window. -
Ford Assassination Attempt
Gerald Ford was on the northern grounds of the California State Capital. When he was shaking hands with people in a crowd, Lynette Fromme pulled out a pistol. She didn't have any bullets in the chamber though and was soon apprehended. She was released from prison on August 14, 2009. -
Carter Assassination Attempt
Jimmy Carter was to give a speech at the Civic Center Mall in Los Angeles. Ten minutes before it started, Raymond Lee Harvey was found carrying a pistol. He was arrested and claimed that he was part of a four-man group of assassins. He also had a mental illness. -
Reagan Assassination Attempt
Ronald Reagan was returning to his limousine after a speech at the Hilton Washington Hotel. Before reaching the vehicle, Reagan and three other men were shot and wounded by John Hinckley, Jr. in an attempt to impress actress Jodie Foster. Reagan was hit by one bullet which broke a rib and punctured a lung. He had emergency surgery immediately after and Hickley, Jr. was arrested. -
Bush Assassination Attempt
President George W. Bush was giving a speech in the freedom square of Tbilisi, Georgia. During the speech, Vladimir Arutyunian threw a Soviet-made grenade toward the podium. It was live but didn't explode because a handkerchief was wrapped tightly around it. After escaping, Arutyunian was arrested in July 2005. -
Obama Assassination Claim
During the presidential campaign in 2008, a man in North Carolina made threats at a waffle house in Charlotte to kill Barack Obama. The man, Jerry Blanchard, claimed he was the antichrist and planned on shooting him. The Secret Service intervened this though. The man was arrested for his threats.
