Plate Tectonic Theories

  • Abraham Ortelius Theory

Ortelius was the first to say that the continents might have drifted, but didn't have much proof besides that, the continents looked like they could fit together ike a puzze, until Alfred Wegener dove deeper into it
  • Edward Suess Theory

His hypothesis was that the earth was shrinking. His proof was that the Earth was losing interior heat from the core. He wasnt believed upon because his evidence was convincing enough
  • Alfred Wegener's Continental Drift Theory

    Alfred Wegener's Continental Drift Theory
The theory that all bodies of land on Earth formed one landmass named Pangaea, and then separated after many years. He discovered that the continets fit like puzzle pieces and that there were other organisms that were on the other side of the world, but he couldnt figure out why the process of continental drift happened, why it was a slow process, and how long it took for the continents to drift, so nobody believed him.
  • Arthur Holmes Theory

His hypothesis was that the mantle contained convection cells that dissipated radioactive heat and moved the crust. His evidence was that currents moved the same way through the mantle, but didnt have evidence to support his theory.
  • Harry Hess Theory

His theory was that the seafloor was spreading, but his evidence was that there was plastic mantle rock flowing beneath the Earth's oceanic crust. His theory wasnt accepted because he didnt have convincing geological evidence
  • Lawrence Morley Theory

His theory was that rock on the ocean floor were imprinted with a record of the direction and intensity of the earths magnetic field. His evidence was that surveys showed that there were normal and reverse magnetism in the oceans crust. His work was published, so many people believed him.
  • Frederick J. Vine

Along with Drummond Matthews, he discovered that the cause of sea floor was spreading by magnetic stripes on the sides of ridges on the sea floor, but he didnt have enough evidence to convince scientists.
  • John Tuzo Wilson Theory

His theory was that tectonic plates might move over hotspots. His evidence was that the sources of hotspots were from volcanos, and many people believed him that this was true because he had solid evidence.
