    Oscar's Education
    Until the age of nine, Oscar was educated at home by a French bonne and a German governess. Oscar then attended Portora Royal School in Enniskillen.
  • Isola's Death

    Isola's Death
    Isola died at age nine of meningitis. Ilde then dedicted a poem titled "Requiescat" to his sister.
  • Baptized

    In the 1870s Wilde was baptized and he retained a lifelong interest in Catholic theology and liturgy.
  • Wilde Advancing in Education

    Wilde Advancing in Education
    Wilde left Portora with a royal scholarship to read classics at Trinity College, Dublin, from 1871-1874. Here, WIlde shared a room with older brother Willie Wilde.
  • Wilde's Learning

    While in his third year at Magdalen College, Wildes learning was developing in much larger ways. He was rusticated for one term where he went on a trip to Greece with his Professor Mahaffy

    Wilde won hte 1878 Newdigate Prize for his poem "Ravenna"
  • Graduate

    In Novemeber 1878, he graduated with a rare double first in his B.A. of Classical Moderations and literae Humaniores.
  • Return to England

    Wilde returned to Engladn in 1878 where he found his childhood sweetheart, Glorence Balcombe, getting married. Wilde then spent hte next six years in London, Paris, and in the U.S. where he gave lectures as a profession.
  • Marriage

    Wilde married Constance Lloyd on May 29, 1884. They later had two sons.
  • Magazine Editor

    Mid 1887 Wilde became the editor of hte Lady's World Magazine. He left the magazine in October of 1889
  • Picture of Dorian Gray

    The first version of The Picture of Dorian Gray was published in the July 1890 edition of Lippincott's Manthly Magazine. The book was then revised in 1891. Six chapters and a preface were added.
  • Return to Paris

    Wilde returned to Paris from London in October of 1891.
  • Imprisoned

    Wilde was convicted of gross indecency and sentenced to two years' hard labour. Here he became ill. Wilde was released on May 19, 1897 and he possessed a feeling of religious revival.
  • Wilde's Death

    Wilde died of cerebral meningitis.
  • Burial

    Burial
    Wilde was initially buried inthe Cimetiere de Bagneux; in 1909 his remains were disinterred to Pere Lachaise Cemetery. In 1950 his ashes were placed in a compartment in the tomb.

    Since 1999 admirers bestowed lipstick kissed on the tomb and the received grease wore downt he stonework. The tomb is now outfitted with a enw glass barrier to shield the grave.
