George and Lennie are run out of Weed
Lennie grabbed a girl's dress because he wanted to feel it, but didn't let go when she started getting freaked out. She ran to the authorities and claimed that she was raped, then George and Lennie ran out of town. Reactions:
When he remembered, Lennie seemed triumphant that they hadn't been found while escaping, while George was pretty fed up. -
The duo camp out by the river for the night
George and Lennie eat beans, talk, and then sleep beside the Salinas River. During that time, George finds out that Lennie had kept a dead mouse in his pocket to pet, and then gets rid of it. George also tells Lennie that if anything happens he needs to come back here and hide in the brush. Reactions:
Uhh. Lennie and George are both somewhat content once they go to sleep, although George seems a bit grumpy but I think it's just out of care. -
The duo arrive at their new workplace
George and Lennie arrive at the ranch late and meet their new boss. Reactions:
George got on Lennie's case about Lennie forgetting that he was not to say anything when the boss was there. Lennie was apologetic. -
The duo meet some new characters
George and Lennie meet the people they share their bunk house with: Candy, Curley, Slim, Carlson, and Whit. They also meet Curley and his wife. Reactions:
Everybody seemed to hit it off alright with George and Lennie, except for Curley and his wife.
Candy gossiped with George, Slim let Lennie have a puppy, Whit played cards with George, and Carlson's Carlson.
Curley was intimidating to Lennie and George wasn't too nice to Curley's wife. -
Carlson shoots Candy's dog
Candy didn't want to shoot his own dog so Carlson stepped up to the plate and did it instead. Reactions:
Everybody looked over to Candy when they heard the sound of the shot, though none of them really did anything more than that. Candy was quiet but by how his body language was described he seemed quite upset. -
Curley gets wrecked
Curley picks on Lennie and starts a fight with him, only for Lennie to panic and crush Curley's hand.
Lennie was very, very upset by the situation, and everybody else was really surprised. Lennie asked George if he could still tend to the rabbits. -
Lennie visits Crooks
Lennie goes to visit Crooks in his quarters and listens to Crooks vent about how lonely he is, and Candy joins them eventually as well. Then, Curley's wife confronts the men and they have an odd, hostile sort of conversation. Reactions:
Crooks acted like he was annoyed and inconvenienced but he was actually really happy to have company. Once Candy arrived they talked about their plans for owning a ranch and they all were hopeful, until Curley's wife arrived and the mood changed for the worse. -
Lennie kills Curley's wife
Not purposely, of course. She invited him to pet her hair after he told her that he likes to pet soft things, and when he started petting her hair too hard she yelled for him to let go.
That lead Lennie to instinctively close his hand on her hair, and she screamed. Lennie grabbed her and covered her mouth to muffle the scream, and then he shook her, breaking her neck. Reactions:
Lennie was very worried and he knew that he had done something bad, so he ran off to hide in the brush by the river. -
Lennie, like, hallucinates or something
As Lennie sits in the bush, he has visions of his Aunt Clara and a big rabbit scolding him, filling him with the belief that he's only a burden to George and that he's no good.
Lennie obviously isn't in a good mindset. Reactions:
Lennie's feeling a lot of grief. -
George approaches Lennie
George reaches Lennie before the other guys.
He reassures Lennie that he's not mad and he never was. They repeat some of the words that they had many times before repeated. Reactions:
George tells Lennie to look out across the lake, and they talk about how they'll get their own ranch, with chickens and rabbits and such. They just talk. -
George shoots Lennie

The other guys catch up
After George shoots Lennie, the other guys catch up to him and come across the scene. George lies and says that Lennie had Carlson's gun and that he took it from Lennie to shoot him. George himself had the gun the whole time.
Slim seems to understand what George had to do. -
Everybody else finds out about Curley's wife
Candy and George had plotted to act like they hadn't already come across Curley's wife so nobody would think that George was in on it. Reactions:
Everybody else was outraged, especially Curley and Carlson. Those two want to shoot Lennie. -
Lennie kills his puppy
Obviously not purposely though. It was too small, he reasoned. They told him it was too small but he didn't listen and played with it anyway. Reactions:
Lennie was at first sad that the puppy died, but then as he kept talking about it he got angry because he was sure that George wouldn't let him tend to the rabbits now and he got angry at the dog. -
Curley's wife approaches Lennie
As Lennie mourns the loss of his pup and the fact that he's so sure that George won't let him tend to rabbits anymore, Curley's wife comes to talk to him, and they have a conversation.
Lennie says that George told him not to get involved with her. Reactions:
Curley's wife was upset that George had told Lennie not to get involved with her. She talked about how lonely she gets and how she was going to be an actress but she married Curley instead. -
Candy finds Curley's wife
Lennie left to go hide in the bush like George had told him to do if he ever got in any trouble, and not too long later Candy entered the barn and found the body of Curley's wife. Reactions:
Candy left and came back with George and, horrified, they planned what they would do next.
