The stock market begins to crash on this date, leading to the Great Depression. People are left jobless, homeless, and lonely. -
The Girl In the Red Dress
Lennie sees a lady wearing a red dress and he wants to feel it. The woman is caught of guard and claims that Lennie tried to rape her. Lennie and George have to hide in an irrigation ditch before they can escape from Weed. -
The Farm
Lennie and George first talk about their dream of owning land and having a farm while camping out on the first night of the novel. Lennie expresses his specific desire to have his own rabbits. -
Arrival
George and Lennie arrive at the ranch and meet the boss, Candy, Curley, Curley's wife, Slim, and the other ranch workers. -
Curley vs. Lennie
Curley is intimidated by Lennie so he picks a fight. Lennie does not know his own strength and ends up breaking Curley's hand out of self-defense. -
The Demise of Candy's Dog
After much debating with Slim and the other ranchers, Candy finally allows Carlson to kill his dog. The dog is old and stinks and it is his time to be put down. Candy is very upset because his dog was his one true companion. -
Lennie Kills Curley's Wife
After having a long conversation with Curley's wife, Lennie starts to feel her hair. He strokes it too hard and she gets angry, which puts Lennie in a panic. After a struggle between the two characters, Lennie ends up accidently killing her by breaking her neck. -
George Saves Lennie
Once George realizes what has happened, he tries to find Lennie before the others can. He saves Lennie from being murdered by Curley by killing Lennie himself.
