Odd Thomas and Stormy Llewellyn
Odd is a 20-year old short order cook who lives in Pico Mundo, California. He isn't as mature as he should be and his life is very unusual. Odd and Stormy are soulmates according to them.Odd says "We believe that we are soul mates" (Koontz 7). Stormy is his girlfriend who is an unusual girl who sees this life as boot camp and believes in gratification. -
Harlo Landerson and Penny Kallisto
Odd is walking with Penny and runs into Harlo in his '67 Pontiac Firebird and Penny signals Odd. Odd finds out that she is telling him that Harlo is her killer. When Odd confronts Harlo, Harlo runs and Odd chases after him. Odd chases him through backyards and end up in a house. They fight in a kid's room and eventually Harlo gives up. Odd calls the police and everything gets sorted out. -
Odd's gift
The reason Odd was able to catch Harlo is because he can see the dead. Penny was dead and he is the only person with this gift. Along with seeing dead people he sees anything to do with spirits. There are these creatures he calls bodachs and they are not a good sign. They symbolized that something bad is about to happen wheather they are swarmming the potential killer or the potential victim. -
Following Fungus Man
Odd is on his shift at the Pico Mundo Grille and a newcomer walks in. This newcomer is nicknamed, by Odd, Fungus Man and he gets Odd's attention right away. He gets his full attention when he orders enough food for three people, and then he is able to eat all of it. After he leaves, Odd goes to follow him. He follows him to the mall where everything seems normal, but Odd has his suspicions. Finally, Odd follows him to his house and waits for him to leave. -
Searching Fungus Man's House
Once Fungus Man leaves, Odd breaks into his house. He looks around and it is very messy. Odd is also cold and it is coming from one room in particular. He goes to this room and it is very cold and absolutely pitch black. He steps in and instantly goes deaf and blind. Odd says "Without either sound or vision, I quickly grew distorted" (Koontz 85), as he walks into the room. In the middle he can see a red light that he walks towards and then he is back in the living room. It was a time machine. -
Black Room to abnormal office
Odd goes back to the black room for a third time, but it is completely different this time. It is now an office that is clean unlike the other parts of his house. The abnormal part about the office was the shrines to serial killers. He had three pictures on the wall of serial killers and in his desk were files of many more famous serial killers. -
Fungus Man Following Odd
Odd spots Fungus Man following him on two occasions. The first was when he went to comfort Little Ozzie, because Little Ozzie's cow exploded. He saw Fungus Man outside on Litttle Ozzie's driveway. The second time was when he was with Stormy in the church on a date. He sees Fungus Man in the graveyard while setting up and then Fungus Man starts chasing Odd. Eventually Odd and Stormy escape and get back to her house. -
Viola's and Odd's Dreams Connected
Odd has a re-occuring dream of a massacre in a bowling alley and has found out when Fungus Man is going to do something: the next day. He knew about Viola's dream but wanted to get more details. After talking to her he finds out that their dreams are connected. For this reason he wants Viola to cancel all of her plans for the next day. -
Bob Robertson Dead
Fungus Man real name is Bob Robertson. When Odd returns home he finds a gun in his apartment. After searching he finds Robertson in his bathtub murdered. He was shot in the chest and whoever killed him didn't leave much of a trace. -
Odd Dumping Body
After Odd collects himself, he decides to hide the body instead of calling the police. First, he wraps it in a bed sheet and throws it in Rosilia Sanchez's truck. He goes back and cleans the room of any evidence of a murder or dead body. Once he's done he drives just outside of town to a Quonset hut to dipose of the body. When he comes out after hiding the body he confronts four wovles. Luckily a spirit saves him and he escapes and gets away from there. -
Chief Porter Shot
After dumping the body Odd heads to Chief Porter's house. When he arrives he finds out that the chief had been shot three times in the chest and one skimmeed his head. Odd went to the hospital to see him and talks to Mrs. Porter. They both think that it was someone he knew because they called his private line. -
Black Meditation Card
When Odd searched Robertson's body he found an unusual card in Robertson's wallet. He went around asking people if they knew what it meant, and one of the nurses knew something. All she could tell him was to get rid of it because it had bad mojo. Since it had braille on it he went to his blind friend Shamus. "He read the card with his finger tips and said, "'Father of lies'" (Koontz 317). -
Parent Problems
First Odd goes to talk to his father, but his father is only worried about why Odd made his wedding this Saturday. All he wants is for Odd to change the date. Since he can't talk to his father, he then went to his mother. His mother is even worse and is the source of his fear of guns. She almost shot him when he was young. His mother did help, but unintentially. -
Mall Shooting
Odd uses psychic magnetism and it leads him to Green Moon Mall. When he first gets in the mall he knocks out Bern Eckles: one of the shooters. Then he proceeds to the middle of the mall and the shooting starts. Next he comes face to face with Varner and shoots him and eventually kills him. -
Bomb
After he kills Varner he heads towards the south end of the mall and finds an unusual truck parked. He convinces the guy there to open the truck and discovers a bomb. The truck driver who drove it in saw Odd and started shooting. He hit Odd in the back a few times, but Odd had to defuse the bomb. Odd grabbed some wires and fell back ripping some wires out. Odd blacked out, but he defused the bomb.
