Noam Chomsky (December 07, 1928- present)

  • Being Born During The Great Depression

    An American Linguist now, but back on December 07,1928 Chomsky was born and raised in Philadelphia. This linguist had to face some great burdens as a young child, the Great Depression was not easy time for most. However, Chomsky ended up having a younger brother that he ended up taking care of.
  • A Brilliant Child

    Chomsky was sent to a progressive school as a child that allowed him find himself. During his time there he wrote an editorial at the young age of 10 that would later on turn into a paper for the New York University.
  • A Child with Opinions

    At only the age of 13 Chomsky started developing political views which at the time were that people are entitled to their opinions and that we should not just accept authority, but rather authority earn its right to be respected.
  • College and Becoming the Scholar

    As many college students feel, Chomsky had also felt like his time at the University to be of little use. That is until he met a structural linguist that goes by the name of Zellig Harris. The two inspired each other and brought light to each others achievements.

    His Teachings and Career

    Chomsky became a professor at the prestigious Havard University where he actively taught from 1955-2005. During this time he taught that language is born within everyone, we do not start out as blank slates. He also taught the reasoning behind why we are different is because we are all at different times in our brains. A good example he typically uses with this is how children's minds are sponges therefore learning a new language is going to go differently than an adult.
  • His Teachings and Career Continued...

    He often tied his teachings with his political views. By many he is believed to be a 'Libertarian Socialist' do to radical beliefs. Throughout his career he wrote many books and essays such as "The Responsibility of Intellectuals" and "On Western Terrorism: From Hiroshima to Drone Warfare". After he retired he has been traveling to different universities to give lectures and talks.
  • Sydney Peace Prize

    Chomsky was given the Sydney Peace Prize for "For inspiring the convictions of millions about a common humanity and for unfailing moral courage. For critical analysis of democracy and power, for challenging secrecy, censorship and violence and for creating hope through scholarship and activism to promote the attainment of universal human rights." (Sydney, 2011).
