    On this date, MLK became the main pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. While he is at this church he becomes the president of the Montgomery Improvement Assosiation and he also led congregation and the African American community during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He did this all while completing his doctoral studies at Boston University.

While in solitary confinement in jail he writes "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." After getting arrested he starts getting worldwide attention form some of the things he is doing.

    On June 23, 1963 MLK lead 125,000 people on a "Freedom Walk" in Detroit, Michigan. He had the leaders of local and national organizations give speeches at this event to show its importance. This event is thought to be the biggest civil rights demonstration in the nation's history up to that point.

    MLK speaks at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom at the Lincoln Memorial. There, he delivers, to a quarter of a million people, his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. This is by far his most important event in his life. Some people remember him strictly from this speech.

    MLK gets the Nobel Peace Prize
    At age 35, MLK is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. When he was awarded this he is the youngest person to be given the award. As he accepted the award he stated that every penny of the $54,000 reward would be used for the civil rights movement. He was the second African Americsn person to recieve this award.

    After addressing more than 50,000 people at Soldier Field in Chicago, MLK leads the people to City Hall. There he posts demands on the door of Mayor Richard J. Daley. On the door he launches a drive to make Chicago an "open city" for housing. A couple days after the rally is over riots start broke out all over Chicago.

    On April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King was standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis where he got shot and killed by James Earl Ray. Initially when he gets shot, Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) member, Ralph Abernathy hurries to the balcony and holds his friend's head until the help arrives and rush him to St. Joseph's Hospital in Memphis. He is then pronounced dead by doctors later that night.
