In the Ceremony of Twelve, the Elders recognize publicly that Jonas posessed the virtue of Courage/Bravery. To be the Receiver, you had to be brave to be able to pass the rigorous training. "We feel certain that you are brave." -Chief Elder -

Jonas tells the Giver he is brave
When The Giver tells Jonas that the memory he will be about to receive will be painful, Jonas tells him that he is brave.
- "I'm brave, I really am." -
He tried to give his friends his new abilities without permission.
Jonas wanted to try and give his friends the new abilities that he had learned from the Giver. He didn't have the permission to do that, so, he bravely tried to do it without the consent of the Giver or the Elders. (he went against the system) -
Jonas continued training even though he didn't want to
There came a time when Jonas did'nt want to go to train with the Giver anymore. He didn't want to feel all that pain anymore. But, he sucked it all up and continued going. (he was brave) -
He asked his parents if they loved him
Jonas was brave to ask his parents if they loved him, because they did'nt know what love was and using that word was against precision of language. He also didn't know what to expect as their answer to the question. -
Jonas stopped taking the Stirrings pill
Jonas decided to stop taking the pills for the Stirrings, because something inside did'nt want to take them anymore. He began to see that the pills were taking his freedom away, so he stopped. (he was brave to go against the system for his freedom) -
Jonas watched his father release a baby
The Giver told Jonas that he couldn't watch the release of his daughter. When it happened, he had to look away, beacause he wasn't brave enough. However, Jonas watched the entire release of the smaller twin, by the hand of his own father, implying that he did have that bravery. -
Jonas decided to make a plan to escape the Community
After a long time of trying to decide, he finally came to the conclusion that he had to leave. The world out there was dangerous, but if he stayed, his life would never have any meaning. It was a very BRAVE choice. -
He escaped with Gabriel
Jonas escaped, breaking 3 important rules in the process. He also decided to take Gabriel with him, which was also an extremely brave choice, since taking care of a baby is extremely difficult, especially alone. -
HE DID IT
Jonas did it, he escaped. He faced the challenge, he set himself free and gave Gabe an opportunity at life. He bravely endured the journey to Elsewhere, and eventually, he found it.
