It looks cool to smoke
Josh (15) sees his friends smoke and he does not. Erickson's stage 5, Adolescence: Identity v. Identity v. Confusion. Josh has grown up with the same friends since kindergarden. Lately his friends have really gotten into smoking and Josh does not want to smoke. His friends offer his a cigarette all the time but he turns them down. Josh is worried that they will discontinue to be his friends if he continually disregards their advances.
