Hercules hometown of Thebes has to pay homage every year to the King of Minyans. The King of Minyans was enraged to hear that Hercules stumbled upon Minyans & cut of their ears, noses & hands, the king then declared war on Hercules & the people of Thebes. -

Hercules killed his own children & wife which could be argued that he did not play his role as a "hero" by reacting in this type of behavior. -

Hercules visited Oracle of Deplhi when he was then told that he could atone for the mistake/sin that he made, by serving King Eurystheus. -

Approach
Hercules then atones for the crime that he committed by serving King Eurystheus. The king told him that he must complete 12 labors in which he agreed to do. -

Hercules tackles the 12 labors & atoned for his crime. Along the way of completing his 12 labors he came across a few enemies & foes along the way. -

For his last labor, hercules was assigned to go to Ertheia, in which he must sail across the Atlantic Ocean to do so. -

The King told Hercules that two of the labors were not completed individually & Hercules had to re do it by himself. The King commanded Hercules to complete the 2 incomplete labor by himself which he had no problem doing. -

After completing the 12 labors, Hercules were finally able to atone for the murder of his children & wife. -
