1738- Washington family moves
Washington family moves to Ferry Farm;spends most of his youth there. -
1743- John Augustine Washington
Augustine Washington, George's father, dies. George Washington is only 11 years old. Although George Washington is the older child of his household. Augustine lives most of his property to his sons from his first marriage.
George Washington's formal education ended after losing his father, but he inherited 10 slaves from his father's estate. -
1753- French and Indian War
George Washington was given the rank of major in this war. His job was to see how strong the French were at Ohio Country Valley. -
1755- Revolutionary Battles
On April 19th shots were fired at Lexington and Concord. George Washington was appointed general and commander-in-chief of the new Continental Army. -
1759- George Washington marries
Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis on January 6th. They did not have children together, but Martha had two of her own from a previous marriage. -
1776- Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th. -
1779- Peace Plan
A peace plan is approved by Congress stipulating independence and British evacuation of America on August 14th. -
1783- Resigning
In the end of the American Revolution, Washington addressed Congress on December 23 in Annapolis and resigned his commission. He gave power back to the people and declared a HERO! -
1787- Washington becomes legendary!
George Washington was unanimously elected as the first president of the United States. He took the oath of office on April 30th in New York City. He was addressed as "Mr. President." -
1791- Bill of Rights
On December 15th, the Bill of Rights became law. The first 10 amendments to the Constitution of the United States guarantee basic liberties to Americans. -
1793- Re- elected President
On April 22nd, Washington issued the Neutrality Proclamation to keep the United States out of the war between France and Great Britain. -
1797- Retired
Washington retired from the presidency and all public life. He left his office after two terms, set a precedent that has been held to by most of the American presidents who followed him. He returns to Mount Vermont and his peace of retirement. -
1799- Death
George Washington passed away on December 14th from a throat infection called epiglottis in his bedroom at Mount Vernon. He was 67 years old and surrounded by close friends and his loving wife, Martha. In his last will and testament, he arranged for all of his slaves to be freed.
