    Ernst Mach biography
Ernst Mach was a physicist and philosopher who was known for his large amount of scientific contributions. From a young age he showed an interest in the science field, he became extremely proficient in physics and mathematics. Ernst became a professor at a university where he taught various classes on philosophy and physics up until 1895. Ernst continued his teachings until 1901 when he retired. In 1913 he moved in with his son and stayed there until his death in 1916 right after his birthday.
  • Doppler effect

    Doppler effect
In 1860 Ernst was able to successfully test the doppler effect in a laboratory. The report he published about the effect being correct was called "On the Change of Color and Tone by Movement" ( Mach 1860 ). Ernst constructed a device to test frequency changes. The device would blow air into a whistle either towards or away from an observer. It was determined that sounds waves had a higher frequency when they moved toward an observer and a lower frequency when it moved away from the observer.
  • Mach Bands

    Mach Bands
In 1865 Ernst described an illusory phenomenon, he proposed these bands was due to contrast perception. Optical illusions are dark bands along the edge of gradients and the light bands are along the inner edge of gradients. Ernst argued this was because of perceiving the relations between stimuli. He discovered that our senses process information and then sends the signals to the brain, this was called lateral inhibition within our sense organs.
  • Human balance

    Human balance
Ernst Mach and Josef Breuer discovered there was a function in the inner ear that helped control, the balance of a person. This was discovered in 1873. The invention was a swivel chair that was design to test the experience of motion. This invention proved that the sense of balance is determined by the fluid in the inner ear, located in the semicircular canal. Depending on the motion of the fluids inside this canal, this will determine the balance of a human.
  • Mach Number

    Mach Number
Ernst created a system to compare the velocity of supersonic speed to the speed of sound. The measurement scale he used was called the Mach Number. Mach 1 was the speed of sound, and everything faster than the speed of sound would be labeled Mach 2 or 3.The system used a ratio of the speed of sound compared to the speed of an object (M= V/A). His research made him the originator of super-sonic aerodynamics, because of the discovery of supersonic and subsonic.
