Ender's Moniter Chip is Removed
The monitor on the back of Ender's neck (which allows the IF to observe and evualuate whether he is right for the Battle School Program) is removed, presumably ending his chance of attending Battle School. Which is a place where they train children to become commanders who will fight in the war against the alien race that threatens their world. -
Ender Fights Stilson
After Ender's moniter is removed, Stilson, one of his classmates, and his buddies begins picking on him. Saying that Ender's moniter was removed becuase he isn't good enough for Battle School and reffers to Ender as a "Third", which are considered negative by society. Stilson then lunges for him and Ender reacts and fights back. Ender get Stilson on the ground and contiuously kicks him, conviced that if he hurt Stilson enough he wouldn't hurt Ender again. Ender, unknowingly, fatally wounds him. -
The Visit From Colonel Graff
The next morning, an IF officer shows up at Ender's door and tells his parents about the fight between him and his fellow classmate Stilson. When the officer asks Ender why he didn't stop kicking the other boy, Ender replied with, "Knocking him down won the first fight. I wanted to win all the next ones, too. So they'd leave me alone." The IF officer then introduces himself as Colonel Hyrum Graff, director of training at Battle School, and he came to invite Ender to enter the program. -
The Launch
Ender accepts Graffs offer and the next day Ender and nineteen other boys are loaded onto a shuttle. After the shuttle launches and is submerged into anti-gravity Ender amuses himself by changing his perception of Graff's orientation while floating around the room. Graff sees the smile on his face and asks what he finds so funny. Ender explains and Graff annouces that Ender must be the only smart one on the shuttle for noticing that gravity can go any way, which makes the other boys angry. -
The Shuttle Fight
After Graff makes it clear that Ender is better than the others he returns to his seat. Ender realizes that Graff isolated him on purpose to peg the other boys against him. The boy next to him starts picking on him and Ender tries to explain that he had nothing to do with what Graff said. Another boy starts hitting Ender. As his fist comes close, Ender grabs his wrist and pulls, accidently throwing him across the room. He hits a wall with his arm twisted under him, breaking it. -
Shen
One day, Bernard, the boy who broke his arm, started making fun of Shen, who's another launchie. Ender got back at Bernard by sending everyone an anonymous message making fun of Bernard and labeled it "from God". Shen approached Ender at breakfast and asked how Ender did it. Ender never admitted to sending the messade but Shen knew it was him, earning Ender a new friend and ending his isolation. -
Alai
The launchies are introduced to the battle room, which is large area with no gravity where they will learn to fight. Inside the battleroom, Ender figures out how to maneuver in null gravity, along with another recruit named Alai. Ender and Alai become friends, and this helps Ender fit in with the rest of the group. Later that night Ender managed to get farther in a computer simulation than anyone ever has which, even though he doesn't know, captures the commanders attention. -
Salamander Army
Ender returns to his bunk after dinner and Alai hands him a paper that states that he has been promoted to Salamander Army. Ender goes to his new barracks where he is befriended by Petra Arkanian, the only girl in the army. The army commander, Bonzo Madrid, thinks he's useless and forbids him from participating in battles. Ender practices with Petra and begins to teach his launch group what he knows. He disobeys Bonzo's orders and helps his army win a battle. -
Rat Army
After disobeying Bonzo's orders Ender gets traded to Rat army commanded by "Rose the Nose". Ender is assigned to Dink Meeters platoon and, unlike in Salamander army, he participates in battles. Ender does really well and continues teaching his Launchies, even though this causes resentment among other soldiers. While practicing with his launch group a pack of older boys showed up and tried to hurt Ender and his group. Ender fought back and injured 4 of the boys. -
Locke and Demosthenes
Meanwhile, Peter convinces Valentine that it is time for them to assert themselves. Peter's ambition drives him to manipulate world events and he has the intelligence to do so. Valentine agrees to work with him because she wants to create a positive impact. Disguised on the information networks as Locke and Demosthenes they soon begin to exert an influence on the world. -
Phoenix Army
By this time Ender has become a platoon leader in Phoenix Army commanded by Petra. Everyone respects his brilliance and his practice sessions are attended by many, but he has become depressed with the person he has become and hates that he is just a pawn in the Battle School, being controlled by the Commanders. The mind game gets to him as it convinces him that he has become just like his older brother Peter, who is a manipulator, killer and vile person and Ender gives up on his training. -
Valentine's Letter
In an effort to motivate Ender, Graff travels to earth in search of Ender's sister Valentine. The only person Ender truly loves any more. Colonel Graff comes to visit Valentine and has her write Ender a letter. The memory of Valentine helps Ender to ground himself, and he is able to continue on with his training and the mind game, which is a great relief to the teachers and commanders. -
Dragon Army
Ender is made commander of Dragon Army and given a group of untrained soldiers. Ender singles out the smallest of the group, Bean, just as Graff had done to Ender. Bean is very bright and precocious, like Ender was, and Bean proves his mettle in practice sessions. His army is given an unusual amount of battles to fight with the advantages given to the other armies, yet Ender wins every battle. Each toon of his army acts as an independent unit, and this revolutionizes battle strategy. -
Dragon Army VS Salamander Army
Ender's army is put up against Salamander Army led by Bonzo. Ender is notified about the battle late and when he and his army show up they find that the battle room is empty. Salamander army was positioned unseen around Ender's gate, waiting for him and his army to enter the battle room so they could ambush them, but Ender figured out their plan. Ender sends out soldiers with human shields which gives them an advantage and they win the battle. -
Ender Fights Bonzo
After Bonzo's humiliating defeat he goes looking for Ender. Ender convinces himself that the teachers will keep him safe. After another won battle Ender goes to the shower room. While washing up Bonzo and 6 other boys show up. Ender knows they've come to kill him so he turns on all the water faucets, intending to make it harder for them to see and make himself slippery. Bonzo lunges for Ender and they fight. Just like the figh with Stilson, Ender unknowingly kills Bonzo. -
Graduated
Ender is transferred to Command School early after his fight with Bonzo, but before they take the journey they travel back to earth so Ender gets a couple months leave. As soon as Ender steps off the shuttle he wants to go back to only place he feels he belongs. Battle School. The sun hurts his eyes, the pull of gravity is different, and he misses the curved pathways. He hates where he is. -
Valentine
Ender spends his brief vacation at a secluded lake house. While there he loses his motivation to attend Command School and become a Commander. In effort to persuade him Graff visits Valentine again and brings her to Ender, intending to have her convince him to go to Command School and help defeat the buggers. While Valentine is there it is clear that things have changed between them. In the end, he decides he's ready to become a leader. -
Command School
Ender and Graff launch to Eros, the planet that holds the International Fleet command, and there Ender is introduced to Mazer Rackham, the hero of the second bugger invasion, who saved mankind. Rackham runs Ender through a series of computer simulated battles, where he now commands an entire fleet. Ender learns that the buggers are like highly evolved insects and they communicate instantaneously—their queen thinks for all of them. Ender begins have strange dreams about the buggers. -
The Final Batte
The battle simulations become increasingly more difficult until one day Ender is given one final simulation where he will be observed by Graff, Mazer, and multiple other officers and commanders. They're testing him to see if he is the commander they've been searching for for so long. Ender begins the simulation and is put up against a bugger army ten-thousand times his own. Impossible to defeat. Yet, despitet the odds Ender wins, but at a great cost. -
The Truth
After defeating the bugger army in the simulation, it is revealed that it was in fact not a simulation at all, but a real battle, as were all his simulated battles. And he had just destroyed the bugger army and their home planet. Ender was used, and he knows it, as do his teachers, but they explain that they needed him, a child, to have the compassion to understand the enemy. At the same time they needed him to think it was a game in order to be able to win with such great loss of life. -
Speaker for the Dead
Peter has taken over Earth and Valentine convinces Ender to go on a colonial mission to the buggers empty world. On the new planet Ender discovers a queen pupa, left behind by the buggers for him to find. The queen "speaks" to Ender and shows him the way they lived and felt, and how they never meant to start a war. Ender writes a book signed "Speaker for the Dead" where he explains their life. He then makes it his mission to find a place for the buggers to rebuild and rise again.
