    Ulysses was born methodist, but was not religious. He attended church services occasionally. He attends schools in Georgetown, Ohio and works on the family farm. His favorite animal on the farm was the horses. This is important because it shows how he worked.

    He departs for the U.S military academy at Westpoint, Newyork. His name is registered as Ulysses S. Grant, a name he will be known for. He spends the next four years on the Hudson river as a cadet.This is important because it shows he went to the academy where great generals came from which he became.

    Grant graduates from Westpoint and is commissioned a brevet second Lieutenant. He is assigned to the fourth infantry in St.Louis. He fights in the Mexican War as a QuarterMaster. This is important because it shows that he is starting in the milatary.

    He is sent to California for two years where he desperatley misses his family and his lovely wife. The next two years are very lonely for the captain as he ponders over his life. August 1854 he returns after resigning his commision. This is important because it shows that he is serious about resigning from the milatary.

    After resigning from the military Grant builds a home near St.Loulis and works on a 60 acre farm. He enters the real estate business with his wife's cousin, he frequently messed up and wasn't cut out to be a business man. Moves to illinois and works for his father. June 17 he is appointed Colonel of the 21st infantry. This is important because it shows he is returning to the milatary where he will become a hero.

    He is assigned General by Abe Lincoln. Grants first battle as Union General is raiding Confederate camps. He is pushed back as the Confederate counter-attack. His troops gained much needed experience in battle.

    General Grant takes fort Donelson, Tennesee. The first Union strategic victory. He Becomes nationally famous with his dispatch. This is important because it was splitting the south in half which was a massive advantage in the north. This is important because it gives the Union a critical win.

    One of Grants major battles was Shiloh. He stood by general Sherman with his fighting force. The Union troops were getting pushed back by the confederates but the generals rallied there troops and were able to push the Confederates back.

    Grant has special plans to take Vicksburg. His plan was to surround fort Vicksburg with his army and wait the confederates out. It took a total of six weeks before the confederates surrendered. This is important because it was the last fort grant has not taken over on the mississippi river.

    Grant and Lee finally clash in virginia. April 2 Grants forces break Confederate lines and force them to retreat. Grant follows wiping out anything in his path. This is important because it led to the ending of the war.
