  • Who was Che Guevara?

    Who was Che Guevara?
    • His real name is Ernesto Che Guevara, he was born in Rosario, Argentina (June 14, 1928)
    • He was known for being a recognized communist figure in Cuban Revolution, becoming the guerrilla leader in South America.
    • Middle-class family, spent most of his holidays traveling around Latin America which made him perceive poverty and the harsh situations of many of the countries he visited. This was a major influence into his conclusion that the only solution was going to a violent revolution.
  • Studies

    After completing his medical studies with his friend Alberto Granado, began a trip and passed through Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela; he kept some notes on his journal by treating his patients (this became his best-selling book called Motorcycle Diaries)

    He went to Guatemala (when Jacobo Arbenz had his regime)
    1954- Since he didn’t have a medical position in Guatemala, he did other jobs; later he started studying Marxism and becomes active on some political activities in which later he would meet Cuban revolutionaries.
    CIA invaded Guatemala and Arbenz resign.

    It was in 1955 that Guevara meets Castro, and that is how he became part of the revolutionary effort.
    These efforts were directed to overthrow Batista government in Cuba. Guevara served as an advisor and led guerrilla troops in these battles.

    Castro takes power in Cuba, Guevara became in charge of La Cabaña Fortress Prison; there is an estimation of 144 people were executed on Guevara’s orders during this time.
    In this same year, he was declared a Cuban citizen, and appointed to head the Department of industry of the National Institute of agrarian reform (INRA) and was also appointed to the National Bank of Cuba as President; his participation helped to shift the country’s trade relations.
  • Guevara leaves the public view

    Guevara leaves the public view
    Guevara visits the United Nations (UNGA) in New York, where he expressed his support for Puerto Rico.
    Later he returned to Cuba but out of the public view. In April of 1965, he delivers a farewell letter to Castro, renouncing his leadership position of the Party.
  • Guevara goes to Bolivia

    Guevara goes to Bolivia
    He encourages people from Bolivia to rebel against their government, but having not much success he was captured with his small guerrilla force, and was killed in October 9, 1967 in hands of the Bolivian Army (having the CIA as advisors)
