    The Americans defeat the British in the War of 1812. They win the final battle known as The Battle of New Orleans, on January 8th-18th in 1815. This battle happened before the news of the Treaty of Ghent arrived in America. This evens lead to the US expanding their land and territory and it broke the power of the American Indians.     The Reform Act of 1832 was the result of a long struggle both in the streets and in Parliament. The final copy of it increased the electorate from around 366,000 to 650,000. The working class was upset by the Act because it didn't make a big difference in their lives. Most of the working class were still not allowed to vote and the Act failed to introduce a secret ballot (bl.uk.com).

    In the summer of 1834 a new poor law was introduced. Some people were happy about it because they thought it would reduce the cost of looking after the poor, take beggars off the streets, or encourage poor people to work hard to support themselves. The law ensured that the poor were housed in workhouses and clothed and fed.     Dickens first started publishing the novel in March of 1836. But they came out little by little in the magazines. This was one of Dickens first novels he had written and his personal favorite. The final chapter of the story came out in November of 1837 (charlesdickensinfo.com).

    This was one of his most famous novels he ever wrote. It's even one of the most Christmas stories ever, still today. It sold 6,000 copies by Christmas. This novel helped people show the true meaning of Christmas and that they should help out the poor especially around the holidays.     Dickens got unhappy with his wife Catherine and their marriage. He didn't like having so many children to support. He saw this as Catherine's fault.     Charles Dickens dies after he had a stroke at the age of 58 in Gad's Hill Place in Kent, England. He was buried in Poet's Corner at Westminster Abbey. He never finished his last novel "The Mistery of Edwin Drood" (biography.com) (Rook 9).
