    Brian Begins His Adventure
    In the beginning of the book “Brians Winter" by Gary Paulsen, a 13 year old boy named Brian is stranded in the middle of the canadian wilderness after a plane crash. This book is the sequel to the book "Hatchet". In this story, Brian finds a radio to get back home. Although, 'Brian's Winter' was written to tell what happens if Brian had not have found the radio. Brian would have had to survive even longer in the wilderness. So now Brian's' solo adventure in the Canadian wilderness continues.
  • The Crash

    The Crash
    Brian just got involved in a very unlikely plane accident as he was on his way to visit his mother in Alaska when out of nowhere his plane pilot had a heart attack as they were in the air. Brian tried taking control of the plane but did not know what he was doing so he let the plane crash as he sat back in his seat in horror not knowing what was going to happen. The plane landed up crashing in a small lake. He struggled to get out of the plane, but used his hatchet to break a window and escape.

    After the unexpected plane crash, Brian swam to shore and found a beach. He then finds a shallow rock cave and sleeps there over night. In the morning he pretty much just spends the day thinking about what happened and crying over how he is going to get home or be saved. Brian liked the look of the lake and thought he could maybe drink and catch fish out of it. He knew he would have to survive on his own for at least a week. He tried to stay strong and get through the tough days alone.

    By the second day, Brian is starting to deal with the factors of hunger and thirst. Brian is starving and wonders how he should get food. Later that day he takes a walk in the woods just to try to find anything to eat. After about an hour of walking, he finds a berry bush behind his rock shelter. He did not know whether the berries were safe to eat or not. Although, Brian is starving and takes a huge gamble by filling up on the berries. The berries tasted great after not having food in days.

    Consequences
    The day after brian ate the unidentified berries, he payed the consequences as he got extremely sick from the berries and was throwing up everywhere. This day Brian did not do anything but sit in his shelter until he started to feel better. Brian learned his lesson about eating unidentified things. From now on he only ate things he knew were safe to eat. He starts to think about how he is going to get safe food to eat. Brian thought about hunting, but he did not think he had the resources.

    Brian continued to think about what he could do to get food. He gets the idea to go fishing in the small lake, as he saw a couple small fish as he was exploring. First of all, he goes near the water and decides he wil try to grab the fish with his hands. After waiting about an hour he sees a fish and tries to grab it, but he fails miserably and does not get the fish. He comes up with the idea to make a spear to try to spear them. Brian goes in the woods and makes a spear by using his hatchet.

    Winter Starts to Take Affect
    After Brian makes a spear and spears some fish for a much needed meal, he discovers his supply on fish is almost gone. Brian becomes worried because he suddenly realizes that the lake has ice on top of the water. Due to this, he can not spear fish. He gets very nerous now knowing his main supply of food is now gone. Brian was not ready for the fearce winter of the Canadian wilderness. He will now need to find a different food source other than the poisonus berries he found.
  • Things Are Not Looking Good

    Things Are Not Looking Good
    Things are not looking good for Brian as he runs out of his food supply of fish. He starts looking around in the woods for food. He searches in the woods for food for a whole day but comes up empty. He contiues to search for food every day but all he can find is a couple of different types of nuts. He starts to really struggle as he begins to starve. He is still searching, now struggling to sleep and walk.

    Brian Makes a Big Discovery
    He is desperate now to find food. He keeps on searching finding some little nuts or edible plants every now and then, but this is not enough. He realizes he is yet to discover the other side of the lake. He makes his way over there. Once he gets there he can not believe his eyes. He saw a sign of civilization. There were human footprints in the snow. He gets a rush of excitment and a huge sigh of relief. But there is one problem, he does not know how who the people are or if they will help him.

    Home Sweet Home
    After making a potentially life-saving discovery, Brian wakes the next morning knowing what he was going to do. He is going to travel to the other side of the lake and follow the newly discovered footprints. He follows them into the winter woods determined to find people. After walking for hours, he finally sees people in the distance. He meets them and finds out that the people are a native tribe. They help him get home to his family and Brian recovers with an experiance he won't ever forget.
