Seen as a Cultural Activist
Since Augusto Boal started to regulate his time at the Arena Theatre as an Artistic director. He was determined to bring in audiences into the arena to become 'spectators' about the plays. This allowed audiences to stop a performance and suggest ideas in order to make improvements to the playwrights. This overall sparked his experimentation with new forms of theatre that would have made an extreme traditional practice. Due to this, he was seen as a cultural activist. -
Torture
Boal was walking home from an Arena performance of Brent where he got kidnapped off the street, arrested and tortured. He was eventually exiled to Argentina, and then self exiled himself to Europe. All because of his experiences of the Theatre and his creativity with it. -

He published his first major theatre text known as "The Theatre of the Oppressed" this text describes the different theatrical forms that includes Image, Invisible, and Forum theatre. -

After he self-exiled to Europe, he went to Paris and continued his way of theatre for about 12 more years. He Taught his revolutionary approach to theatre in Paris. He also managed to get locations for his Theatre of the a Oppressed. In 1981 he also organized his first international festival for Theatre of the Oppressed in Paris. -

Augusto Boal was found offering Legislative Theatre not only as a model for public performance and as a communication network on the Internet. Boal developed a Forum type of theatre that he called Legislative Theatre to be able to work at the neighborhood level to work with the key problems in the city. -
