    When Carnegie was just 13 years old he and his family moved to the United States. They were living in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Carnegie went to work in a factory in which he earned $1.20 a week.

    In 1851 after being a messenger for 2 years, Carnegie decided to go work as a telegraph operator in 1851. 2 years later he started to take a job at the Pennsylvania Railroad where he worked as an assistant and a telagrapher for the railroads top official, Thomas Scott. While working in this cattegory he learned lots of stuff about the railroad industry. 3 years after this, Andrew Carnegie was promoted to the superintendent.

He realized that his investments in oil brought him lots of substantial returns. Carnegie then left the railroad company in 1865.     In 1901, Andrew Carnegie made a huge change that could affect his life. Carnegie sold his business to the United States Steel Corporation. This earned him $200 million. When Carnegie was just 65 years old, he decided to spend the rest of his days helping others. He had begun working on building his libraries and making donation in the early 20th century.

    Carnegie made the "Carnegie Institute of Technology" which is located in Pittsburgh. This was now known as "Carnegie-Mellon University" in 1904.
