First Job
When Carnegie was just 13 years old he and his family moved to the United States. They were living in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Carnegie went to work in a factory in which he earned $1.20 a week. -
Working as a telegrapher
In 1851 after being a messenger for 2 years, Carnegie decided to go work as a telegraph operator in 1851. 2 years later he started to take a job at the Pennsylvania Railroad where he worked as an assistant and a telagrapher for the railroads top official, Thomas Scott. While working in this cattegory he learned lots of stuff about the railroad industry. 3 years after this, Andrew Carnegie was promoted to the superintendent. -
Steel Tycoon
During the time that Carnegie was working for the railroads he began making investments. He made some very good choices. He realized that his investments in oil brought him lots of substantial returns. Carnegie then left the railroad company in 1865. He did this becuase he wanted to focus more on his other buisness interests, which included the Keystone Bridge and steel. -
Carnegie Steel Company
By the next decade, Carnegie began spending most of his time in the steel industry. Carnegie's business "Carnegie Steel Company", boosted steel production in the U.S. He built steel industries around the country. -
Donating
Carnegie then decided to donate about 5 million dollars to the New York Public library. He did this so that the library could open several branches in 1901. -
Philanthropy
In 1901, Andrew Carnegie made a huge change that could affect his life. Carnegie sold his business to the United States Steel Corporation. This earned him $200 million. When Carnegie was just 65 years old, he decided to spend the rest of his days helping others. He had begun working on building his libraries and making donation in the early 20th century. -
He is Devoted to learning
Carnegie made the "Carnegie Institute of Technology" which is located in Pittsburgh. This was now known as "Carnegie-Mellon University" in 1904. -
Creating more and more.
The next year in 1905 he made the "Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching". He had always been devoted to learning. -
And yet even more.
Carnegie now made the "Carnegie Endowment for International Peace". But the business's I've named are not the only business's that he made, he has established MANY other donations and business's. -
Carnegie donations
Carnegie has helped establish 2,800 libraries, because of all his donations and help. He has also wrote some books, including " The Gospel of Wealth." -
