Greek Olympics
Athletes couldn't compete if they didn't speak Greek or if they were a female. Before the games they must have had taken a vow to Zeus saying they had been training for at least ten months. The first and last day of the Olympics were dedicated to honoring Zeus and other gods and goddesses. -

He "created" the type of philosophy called Stoicism. He claimed that true happiness came from accepting everything that happened to you, good or bad. He emphasized people's actions not words. -

Peloponnesian War
This war was involving the Spartans(Peloponnesian League) going against the Athenians. Pericles was the Athenian general and wanted a long term war and wanted to avoid land because he knew they would lose if majority of the war was on land. -

Plato
He founded The Academy, a school that was closed by the emperor because it didn't teach christianity, it lasted 900 years. Plato was thought to be more idealistic than Socrates, his teacher. -

Aristotle
He was a student of Plato. He was at Plato's Academy for 20 years but then started his own school called the Lyceum. He believed there was always more than one way to explain something. He thought the purpose of life was to exercise one's abilities and virtues reasonably. -

Alexander the Great
He was one of Aristotle's students. His father was assassinated and he became king at the age of 20. He wanted to conquer his father's enemy the Persians. -
Period: 323 BCE to 30 BCE
Hellenistic Period
Alexander left no heir, he simply said, " the strongest". Five generals fought each other because they all thought they were the strongest. This spread the Greek culture but also confused many people. -
288 BCE
Alexandria
King Ptolemy created the Alexandria library. Contained 200,000 scrolls. His son continued the library, it had 700,000 scrolls by 100 b.c. It was finally destroyed by robberies, fires, and invasions.
