A flashback occurs back to the time when Santiago initially confronted his dad and explained that he wanted to be a shepherd (because he wanted to travel) instead of a priest. although his father initially was hesitant in the end he agreed and helped him get started. The Gypsy
In Tarifa, the boy hears of this gypsy. As a result he goes and meets with her. He then explains his dream to the gypsy of how there is a "treasure" at the pyramids in egypt. The gypsy then points out the obvious saying that if he would like the treasure he must go to the pyramids in egypt. "I want one tenth of your treasure as my payment" -

The King of Salem
Santiago encounters and elderly wise mane named Melchizidek, the King of Salem. Melchizidek explains omens and the boys "personal legend" and how he must pursue it. "these are urime and thumime they will help you to recognize omens" -

Kings Castle
He goes to the kings castle in hopes of chatting. however the kings busy so he gives him a task of waking around his castle with a spoon of oil which he is told not to spill. 2 hours later he returns, the king asks him what he thought of the castle.the boy was so focused . so the king instructs him with the same task but he tells him to observe his castle. this time when the boy returns there is no oil in the spoon. " the key in life is to observe eveything without soilling the drops of oil" -

Falsely Trusted Thieve
Santaigo arrives at the port in tangier Africa where he befriends a boy at the bar. The hypocrite warms Santiago of thieves. then while they are at the market together the boy takes off with santiago's coins while santiago is distracted. "I realized that I had been so focused I had forgotten of my new friend, I couldn't build up the courage to look beside me. then when i finally did, I saw nothing and no one." -

The Crystal Merchant
Santiago begins the next day by helping a candy seller, he then wanders up the hill to crystal shop where he lands a job and meal for his efforts to clean all the crystal. (the boy)

Goodbye crystal Merchant part A
this is when Santiago lets the crystal merchant know he will be leaving to pursue his personal legend. Of course the merchant attempts to talk him out of it, sharing a story of his dream to go to meka! "when i was younger I told myself I would work hard and when im older i will go pursue my dream, but now that I am older i dont want to because I fear I will have no purpose to move on or continue. -

Goodbye Crystal Merchant Part B
The next day the boy leaves without saying good bye to the merchant because he knows that he is the only one who could change his mind about pursuing his dream. also because he doesn't want to see his face when he leaves -

This is when santiago wakes up in the desert and comes to the realization that the desert terrain will not end soon, and he has difficult travels ahead. "as the boy gazed into the distance he came to the realization the desert would be for a while" -

Englishman
as the boy crosses the Sahara to Al-Fayoum, Egypt, he meets an Englishman whos searching for "the alchemist" in order to learn the secrets of Alchemy. He teaches santiago the soul of the world and the language known by all. "they learn of near by tribes which have begun to war, and pray for safe arrival at the oasis." -

Arrival at the Oasis
upon reaching the oasis, al-fayoums. the englishman goes to pursue his Personal legend while Santiago ponders what to do next. "farewelll my friend" -

when Santiago arrives in the oasis he meets a lady named Fatima who he falls in love with and promises to come back and marry after he pursues his personal legend. -

One night the boy interprets a omen that the oasis will be attacked, he goes to warn the cheiftains. they are suspicous of santiago but they still trust his word in the instant, however if hes wrong they wiill kill! "must I state the consequences if you are wrong" -

Encounter with the Alchemist
Just after departing the chief's tent Santiago meets the alchemist. he shows great interest towards him. he tells him to meet him again the next day if he is not killed. "he showed much interest towards the boy" -

Santiagos foretelling was true and as tribesman invade the village and the attack is prevented. "you were correct. we thank you for this" -

Counsellor position(no thanks)
After santiagos prevented attack he is offered a position to be the counsellor of the oasis. "thank you, but i can not accept" -

Guidance From the Alchemist
after dismissing the position as counsellor santiago chooses to be tested by the alchemist, earning his guidance towards uncovering the hidden treasure. the two begin thier journey across the desert and through the help of the alchemist santiago begins to truly undertsand the world. " I am ready" -

while they travel they are captured by tribesman. the Alchemist negotiates for freedom if santiago turns into the wind. the chief complies and three day later santiago does just that through using all elements and harnessing his energy within. " if he changes to wind, we earn our freedom?'' -

Part of ways
the Alchemist and Santiago part ways at a church. he gives the boy a gold coin to say thank you. santiago digs but the treausure is no where to be found then to add he is robbed of the coin. he then returns home and finds out the treasure was under that church/tree which he had first dreamed it. "He now finally understood what his personal legend meant"
