Poseidon Petrifies the Ship
Angry and very unhappy with the way the Odysseus has been treating him, he wanted to get revenge. He fell asleep at Ithaca, but his ship was turned into stone. "There he waited. As their sea-faring ship approached, moving quickly on her course, Earthshaker came up and turned it into stone. With the palm of his hand.." lines 195-197, stanza 160 -

The Mist of Athena
He was resting on the ship, and was soon on the shore of his homeland. While Odysseus was sleeping, Athena brought upon him a thick mist. It was so thick, he couldn't recognize anything. Even his homeland. "Meanwhile, Odysseus, asleep in his own land,
woke up. He didn’t recognize just where he was.
He’d been away so long, and Pallas Athena,
Zeus’ daughter, had shed a mist around him,
to make him hard for people to identify..." , lines 227-231, stanza 190. -

The Swineherd's Dogs
Odysseus had been told to find the swineherd. He had found it, but he also saw dogs were blocking the entrance. The dogs growled, barked, and ran towards him with a nasty look, but they were soon called to stop by their master. "All of a sudden the dogs observed Odysseus. They howled and ran at him, barking furiously... but the swineherd ran up fast behind them, dropping the leather in his hands. Charging through the gate and shouting at his dogs, he scattered them..." Stanza 30, lines 29-36. -

Athena's Trick
Soon Odysseus was asleep by a rock. Athena had turned into a weird creature. They had fangs and looked like humans, but were not. As soon as you'd talk to one they'd teleport you to a dark and evil place. Some would even call it hell. To leave, you had to tell the worst lie you've ever told.
