    Justian left an exhausted empire but also enduring monuments in the form of Hagia Sophia and his code of law.With the help of his general Belisarius , he regained North Africa from the Vandals (533–34) and, after a lengthy war (535–54), Italy from the Ostrogoths (see Goths).

    Justinian was firmly convinced that as emperor he was God's regent on earth set over a theocratic society in which church and state were one. He believed he had a divine mission to promote uniformity of Christian belief. In pursuit of this goal he suppressed the teaching of pagan philosophy, ordering in 529 the Platonic Academy in Athens to be closed.

    Though not sociable, he was always accessible to his subjects, and his patronage of literature and the arts made his age memorable. Theodora brought out the best in him, overcoming his occasional hesitancy and sharing his faith in the majesty of the Roman Empire. Much of his zest for living left him when she died in 548. They had no children that survived
