Life and Work of W. V. Quine

This timeline will go over the works of W.V. Quine.
  • Philosophical View

Quine is most notably known for his philosophical view of "Naturalism". This is not to say that his naturalism is self-conscious and explicit from the start; it is, rather, something that he became clearer about over the years. (For the development of Quine’s naturalism, see Verhaegh, 2018.)
  • Education

He attended Harvard University for his Ph.D in Philosophy from 1930- 1933. He then started teaching at Harvard in 1936. W. V. Quine from 1936- 1978. https://youtu.be/O1wlNvfASaU
  • A Quote From Quine

I found a quote that I really liked.
-- “Science is not a substitute for common sense but an extension of it.” (1957, 229) --
  • Negative Perspective, Positive Impression

Quine is thought of as negative, as he is very critical of the knowledge presented. Questioning and criticizing others around him. Although he was highly critical he made many attributes by being very skeptical. https://youtu.be/BDyZOltp5lE
  • Quine's Idea of Naturalism

Quine bases his thoughts on "Naturalism" on the ideas of Plato, Descartes, and Kant. He has stated his idea of Naturalism as “the recognition that it is within science itself, and not in some prior philosophy, that reality is to be identified and described” (1981, 21). He views science as an attempt at gaining knowledge.
