    Born in Cincinnati Ohio. Parents are Samuel Louis Kuhn and Minette Kuhn. His family called him Tom.
  • Harvard

    In 1940 Thomas attended the undergraduate program at Harvard University. In 1943 Thomas graduated with a BS in physics. He was the head of the editorial board of the Harvard Crimson his senior year.
  • Extra Curriculars

    In the summer of 1943 he joined the Radio Research Laboratory's Theoretical Group. This group was in charge of devising plans and countermeasures against enemy radar systems. He was so proficient that they sent him to another lab in the U.K. He would then travel to France and Germany after. In 1946 he returned to Harvard to finish his Master Degree in Physics.
  • Marriage

    In 1948 he married Kathryn Muhs and had 3 children. She helped and encouraged his studies for his career. After 30 years of being married, they divorced in 1978.
  • More education

    In 1949 he obtained his Doctorate. His PhD thesis was the cohesive energy of the monovalent metals as a function of the atomic quantum defects. The only reason he continued his education in physics was because it was the most convenient to get his doctorate.
  • Stanford

    In the fall of 1958 he was given a 1 year fellowship at Standford for advanced study. While at Stanford he wrote most of his book "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions". In 1961 he was promoted to full professor in the History department.
  • Death

    Thomas Kuhn died on June 17, 1996 from throat cancer which he suffered from for 2 years. He is survived by his second wife Jehane Bart Burnes and his children Sarah, Elizabeth, and Nathaniel.
