Date of Birth
Gould was born in Queens, New York. -
contribution to science
His contributed to science is punctuated equilibrium. He developed this theory with Niles Eldredge. His theory proposed that most evolution is characterized by long periods of evolutionary stability. Meaning that once a species appeared in the fossil record the population will become stable showing little evolutionary change for most of its geological history. Punctuated equilibrium predicts that a lot of evolutionary change takes place in short periods of time tied to speciation events. -
The Mismeasure of Man
Gould gave an explanation of the misuse of intelligence testing in the book The Mismeasure of Man. He believed that Human intelligence is in a specific location in the brain and that it can be measured by a standard number score. He also believed that if a label was put on the groups as either having inferior or superior intelligence based on those measurements it should be a misuse of scientific data and is an abuse of the scientific process. -

Mesothelioma
Gould was diagnosed with Mesothelioma. He was exposed to asbestos through his work in the museum of comparative zoology at Harvard. He underwent experimental treatment that combined surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. -
Hen's Teeth and Horse's Toes
Gould wrote the book Hen's Teeth and Horse's toes. In this book he argues that the roles that genetics and environment play in the drama of evolution. He describes behavior that is both inherited and learned, is explored as an adaption to local environments. -
Date of Death
Gould died in Manhattan, New York.
