Noam Chomsky

    Avram Noam Chomsky was born in Philadelphia on December 7, 1928. Growing up, he became interested in social issues and politics. At the age of 16, he attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he developed an interest in language. When he met Zellig S. Harris, he considered quitting school to pursue his political goals. Harris shared Chomsky's political views and was a professor and one of the American pioneers of structural linguistics.

    Noam Chomsky married in 1949 to his childhood friend Carol Doris Schatz after being made a fellow at Harvard, but in 1965, he relocated to Lexington, Massachusetts. In addition to being a political activist, Chomsky has worked in several disciplines throughout his life, including linguistics and psychology.
  • 1967

    As an undergraduate, Noam Chomsky read Dwight McDonald's journal on politics, which explained what was happening at the time. This had an impact on his anti-war essay in 1967, "The Responsibility of Intellectuals," during the US wars in Indo-China. Noam Chomsky's work was known to be controversial as he would speak on sensitive topics, exposing their truths, which led to him getting arrested many times for involving himself in linguistics wars.

Chomsky replied that while they were distinct, they shared certain structural similarities. He then proceeded to attack various topics throughout the interview.
