    In 622 common era, after Muhammad learned God's message, Muhammad gained followers and made his way to Yathrib. Many people in Yathrib accepted Islam. The journey marks the start of the Islamic calendar. In 630 common era, Muhammad returned to Mecca with more than enough followers. He named the Ka'aba the official shrine of Islam.

    The Umayyad Caliphate

    The Umayyad Caliphate began in 661 common era and ended in 750 common era. During this time period, the Muslims controlled the entire Iberian Peninsula. The Muslims were defeated in France by Charles Martel. The Muslims had taken over all of the available land, so they had to begin taking over land to the north. Soon after, the Abbasids took over the rule from the Umayyads. The power was located in Baghdad.
