Ernst Mach is born
Ernst Waldfried Josef Wenzel March was born on February 18, 1838 in Czech Republic. His family would not stay in the area but moved near Vienna when Ernst was an infant. This move would ultimately help shape his life and possibly start him down the path of science and philosophy. -
Charles University of Prague
Before shifting over to physics, Ernst Mach was a professor of mathematics at the University of Graz in Austria. As he taught physics and mathematics, Mach would question the current knowledge of a subject at the time. He was a skeptic and firmly believed in experimentation and observations. He was appointed the chair of Experimental Physics at the Charles University in Prague in 1867. -
The Science of Mechanics: A Critical and Historical Account of its Development
Ernst Mach is one of the founders of the philosophy of science and the Science of Mechanics is one of his most important works. He questioned physics, as it was in the 19th century, and laid a foundation of work for the next great physicists. There are many different subjects that he speaks on in this work, including: physics, mathematics, mechanics (how it has developed and analytical mechanics), and others. -
The Analysis of Sensations
The Analysis of Sensations is an important piece of work not just because Ernst Mach explores so many different scientific topics; but because he remained skeptical of what was already established at the time. He speaks of physics, biology, space, and of course sensations. The senses that humans employ to study the world around them are necessary to observe and learn.
