The city of San Fernando was born and is located on the Isla de León. -
Childhood
As a child he studied at the school of Liceo, charity section, until he left school to help his father, a great fan of flamenco singing, in the forge where he worked.
When his father died of asthma, when he was still very young, the family went through financial difficulties, so from the age of seven Camarón began to sing in different taverns and in the San Fernando tram station. -
Adolescence
At the age of twelve, he won first prize in the Flamenco contest at the Montilla Festival (Córdoba). His fame began to spread and he began as a professional in the world of cante with his best friend at the time, the cantaor Rancapino. -
Success
In 1968 Camarón became a fixture at the Torres Bermejas tablao in Madrid, where he would remain for twelve years accompanied on guitar by Paco Cepero. His name begins to be more and more known and he participates in the film Casa Flora, starring Lola Flores. In Torres Bermejas he met the maestro Paco de Lucía, with whom he would record. -
He married and his children
He married Dolores Montoya, La Chispa.With whom he would have four children (Luis, Gema, Rocío and José). -
Success
Under the name of Camarón, an album that represents a true revolution in the world of flamenco by including sounds typical of the world of jazz and rock. In it there are several adaptations of poems by Federico García Lorca with music by Alameda, who were co-producers of the album, as well as Ricardo Pachón, Kiko Veneno and the brothers Rafael and Raimundo Amador. From this moment he began his collaboration with the guitarist Tomatito and he broke ties for a time with Paco de Lucía.
