Revolts in France
Louis Phillippe steps down from his title in France after revolts protesting his reign. This marks France taking steps into becoming an independent country. Freedoms and rights of the people are being recognized and the citizens of France start fighting for it. Louis Napoleon then becomes elected as president of the French Republic (Sandbox Networks) -
Monet's mother dies
In 1857 Monet's mother dies, cause unknown. Louise was a very important part of Monet's life and supported his artistic ways unlike his father who strongly opposed. Louise's death would lead to Monet living with his aunt after the rejection of his father. Monet's aunt would turn out to be a crucial part of his success later in life. (MyHeritage Ltd.) -
Sepoy Rebellion
Uprisings in India occur as a result of British East India Company's rule. Sepoys, or Indian soldiers revolted against the company fighting for rights in their own country. This is an important event because it signifies the fight for independence in India. (Rudolph) -
Slavery in America
A pro-slavery document is denied by the people of Kansas during Abraham Lincoln's presidency. America starts to make progress towards rightful freedom for everyone. In a famous speech Lincoln states: "to prove slavery a very good thing, we never hear a man who wishes to take the good of it, by being a slave himself." (Lehrman) -
Swiss Academy
Claude Monet comes back to Paris to enter the Swiss Academy of the arts in 1859. It is here where he is influenced greatly by many great artists. Pissaro and Corbet who soon helped him create Impressionism. (Caudlier) -
Drafted into Army
In April of 1861, Claude Monet is called into the army to serve several years. He is drafted into Algeria and returns home after one year there due to typhoid fever. It is here where Monet is influenced by the beautiful sunsets and skies of Algeria, leading to more beautiful paintings using Impressionism. (Cauderlier) -
U.S. Civil War
A civil war in America breaks out after much controversy over slavery. America is a nation divided, the northern states fighting for the freedom of slaves and the southern states fighting for their "property". This civil war is eventually won by the northern states and slaves are finally freed of their owners. This is an important step towards equality in the United States of America. (Sandbox Network) -
Art school continued
With the financial help of his artistic aunt, Monet joins Charles Gleyre's studio practice. It is here where he also meets Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Frederic Bazille, future fellow impressionists. The studio after closes down and Moent occupies it along side Bazille, succeeding. This art studio and the people of it contribute to the learning and success of Monet. -
Depression
Claude Monet is officially a struggling artist. He barely is selling any works and he suffers from depression. His continuing failures and his father continually rejecting to help him leads him further and further into depression. In 1868 Monet jumps into the Seine River, attempting to commit suicide. His attempt fails, saving the future of Impressionism and many great creations by Monet (Caudlier) -
Franco- Prussian War
The Second French Empire of Napoleon III and the North German Confederation clash constantly over political aspects. The French feared Germany's expansion and conflicts rose until finally a war was started between the two nations. This is an important event in history because it is the cause of land borders in Europe today. (Ramm) -
European Crisis
Economic problems in Europe strike in 1873. This leads to a depression in Europe and affects many people in Europe. This depression lasts into the 1930's for some countries, making life hard in Europe. -
Exhibition
Monet opens at the Societe anonyme cooperative d' artistes where he shows Impression: Sunrise. Louis Leroy notices his painting and coins the phrase: "Exposition des Impressionnistes", creating the word "Impressionists" for this style of painting. -
Giverny
Monet moves his and Alice's family to Giverny. The house they bought was a beautiful property that influenced his most famous series of paintings "The Water Lily Pool" with the stunning ponds. Monet worked on these series of paintings from 1900 to his death. This would be the house he would spend the next 43 years of his life in. -
Cataracts
In 1907 Monet starts realizing problems with his eyesight. He was diagnosed with cataracts but persevered, travelling all of Europe and continuing to paint, but in less amounts. In 1923 Monet finally decides to undergo a procedure to undo cataracts in one eye. His eyesight improved slightly after that and he was back to painting full time (Avillim). -
Death
December 5, 1926 Claude Monet dies after a short battle with lung cancer. At age 86 Monet died in his loving home in Giverny and was laid to rest with a simple ceremony. Although Monet would easily be considered a very successful man, Monet died very unhappy and unfulfilled with his life as he was very hard on himself and thought of himself as a failure.(Alvillim)
