    first letter sent from Newton Scott in which he discusses how the soldiers including him are always hungry and that eating is the highlight of the day. Newton also writes about how it is extremely cold and that he hopes that he may migrate to a warmer climate soon.

    Newton Scott and the other soldiers in his group are marching towards Helena, Arkansas. On there way Newton writes about how they are passing lttle villages that are terrible looking, and how the people there look about the same. When Scott and the others arrived in the "little" village of St. Louis they grabbed a bite to eat and stayed there for a few days. He says that everyone is in pretty much in good spirits.

    As Newton Scott trsvels on the Lavina Logan down the Taliehatchie River in Mississippi he writes to his friend Han.
    He says that they have 6 to 8 gun boats with them and that they have captured about $100000 worth of cotton and other supplies. He says that they have not seen any rebels yet but they have seen guerillas who shoot at them every once in a while. Scott and the others expect to see rebels soon and start fighting very soon.

    Scott writes about hearing rebel bullets "sing" but how they have not had a real fight yet. One of the soldiers he is with that has become his dear friend has become sick and he writes that it is only getting worse and that he is very likely to die soon. Scott says that many are beginning to fall sick as the expedition goes on.

    Newton Scott writes about being promoted to 8th corporal and how his job has gotten much easier. He is now a gaurd and he saysy that he now loses no slee and he eats well. His group is now 300 strong and they all seem to be doing well.

    Scott wrote to his parents telling him the he is ok and that the rebels suprised attacked them on the 4th of july. Scott says that there cheif was shot and killed in the battle. 400 rebels soldiers were killed tho and they had to bury them all which Scott says that really got to him.

    Scott informs Ms. Cone that Will Holmes who was the guy who Scott wrote that was sick in a previous letter has died. Newton says that the troops walked 18 miles and they found many apples, peaches, and berries. No rebels have been seen around lately and all the guys are relaxed and well.

    Scott and the men must walk down to Little Rock Arkansas at 3oclock today. He says that it is very warm and the walk will mst likely not be a fun one. 5000 troops are expected to march to Little Rock.

    A rebel spy was caught by the gaurds and he has been examined throroughly. They found important papers on him and they took them to examine them. The spy was hung on the 8th.

    Newton writes about his frustrations which include how some soldiers will haft to re-enlist and serve another 3 years while the men up north stay at home and dont enlist or serve at all. Scott says that he believes 3 years is long enough and he intends that it will be enough for him too.

    Scott reports that many men are falling sick again and that his captain's health does not look that promising. Newton Scott writes that he is sending this leeter in moderate health, but not perfect health. He is fine however and is glad to hear that Hannah is doing better.

    Scott says that Han has gotten pretty careless and that they should do better in the future. Scott reports that another one of his close friend/ soldier has passed away in a hospital due to an illness. Most everyone is doing ok but is in very sad spirits after losing a dear friend.

    This letter that Scott wrote to Miss Cone was about his recent travels and how they have been going from land to boat and then back to land. Newton says that they have traveled over 150 miles from Little Rock, Arkansas.
