He was born on May 21, 1895 in Jiquilpan, in the state of Michoacán, México.

In 1920 he was made general, the highest rank in the army, and continued until 1929.

In 1928, he was elected governor of Michoacán, his native state, at the age of 33.

In 1934 he won the presidential elections and became President of the Republic in the period from December 1st, 1934 to November 30th, 1940.

In 1934, he created the Agrarian Reform, he distributed almost double the land to the peasants.

On January1st, 1936, he founded the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) in Mexico City.

In 1936, he organized most of the dispersed labor groups in the country, into the Confederación de Trabajadores de México (CTM).

In 1937, his goverment expropriated the main railway companies in the country.

On March 18th, 1938, President Cárdenas signed a decree for the nationalization of the country's oil industry.

On August 28, 1938, he organized all the peasants into a new National Peasant Confederation (CNC).

On February 3, 1939, he founded the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

He died in Mexico City on October 19th, 1970.
