From his dorm room, Gates calls MITS, the makers of the world's first personal computer. He offers to develop software for them. They decide to give him a chance and they paid him $3,000. -

At age 31, Bill Gates becomes the youngest billionaire ever due to his work at Micro-soft. This year he also met his wife, Melinda French, at Micro-soft in New York. -

The Year of Accomplishments
In July, at age 39 and with a fortune of $12.9 billion, Gates becomes the worlds richest man. Later that summer Microsft introduces Internet Explorer to the world. Also Bill Gates book “The Roads Ahead” holds the No. 1 spot for New York Times best-seller for 7 weeks. -
The Good Samaritan
Queen Elizabeth ll bestows an honorary knighthood on Gates for his contributions to the United Kingdom. Time names him a “Person of the Year,” along with Melinda Gates, for what the magazine called his “good samaritan” work.
