He went to Marlborough Grammar School, where his father taught, and at Brasenose College, Oxford, he graduated in 1935. After working in a settlement house and in little theatre companies, he became a schoolmaster at Bishop Wordsworth's School, Salisbury. -
The Army
He worked as a teacher for a few years before enlisting in the army. He was part of an invasion and the sinking of a German Battleship, Bismarck. He stayed in the army for 6 years.
