Frederick Engels

  • Birth

    Friedrich Engels was born on November 28, 1820, in Barmen, Prussia.
  • Early years

    Frederick was raised in a wealthy household with very liberal political views. As he grew, his father wanted him to get into the expanding business career but Frederick knew he was destined for something else. Although he showed great interest in writing poetry, he spent the next three years gaining business experience working at an export firm.
  • Middle years

    During his middle years, Frederick begun living what looks like a "double" life. He would work during the day like a professional businessman but on a personal level he began to develop an interest in liberal and revolutionary works and taking great interest in leftist intellectuals,
  • Middle years

    In 1841, Frederick enlisted as a volunteer in an artillery regiment in Berlin. He gained great knowledge of the military and different aspects of Berlin while in service and was even referred to as "the general" by his friends.
  • Conversion to Communism

    After being discharged from the military in 1842,Engels met Moses Hess, the man who converted him to communism. This would eventually lead to his major role in writing "The Communist Manifesto (1848)" alongside Karl Marx and set the foundation of modern communism.
